KYLE, TX (April 26, 2009)–Thunderhill Raceway (THR) welcomed the Texas Pro Modifieds and the Texas Pro Trucks to their well-maintained paved track in Kyle this past Saturday and Mark Chrudimsky and Cody Smith are glad they did.

Veteran driver Chrudimsky won the “DWIDUDE.com Pro Modified 50” while first-time truck driver Smith took home the winner’s trophy after the 50-lap Pro Truck main event.

Smith - driving a Pro Truck borrowed from front-running THR regular Shawn Paul Lehman, who missed the race to participate in his younger sister’s wedding ceremony - took the green flag from his pole position and led all 50 laps at the three-eighth mile, D-shaped oval, but it wasn’t as easy as it might seem.

DPS Texas State Trooper D.L. Wilson was the first of three drivers to give Smith a good run for the money, but on the seventh lap fast-qualifier Jason Marshall scooted by Wilson to take over second. No speeding ticket was issued after the pass and Marshall proceeded to make friends with Smith’s rear bumper and otherwise make life difficult for the leader.

After a caution period or two for minor spins, at mid race Marshall began to apply some serious pressure just as Wilson and hard-charging Cory Roper joined the front pair to make it a nice, tight foursome.

On the 29th circuit, Marshall got into Smith’s rear bumper a bit too hard and Smith’s truck went for a smoky spin to bring out the yellow caution flag. Track officials conferred and ruled that Marshall would have to move to the back of the field for the restart due to the contact.

But Smith’s worries were not over as the youngster soon had his mirror full of Wilson and Roper who were having a bit of a battle for second behind right behind him. Roper finally manages to squeak by Wilson for second, but not for long as Roper suddenly gets nearly sideways in turn four which gave Wilson the opportunity he needed to regain the runner-up spot.

All the dicing behind him had allowed Smith to gain a few truck lengths on the pair, but by lap 38 Marshall had worked his way back up to fourth and closed in on Wilson and Roper as the laps clicked down. And with two laps remaining Marshall banged his way past both Wilson and Roper to claim second.

Unfortunately, there were not enough laps for a photo finish showdown and Smith took the checkered flag a few truck lengths ahead of the fast-closing Marshall. Roper, Wilson, newlywed Lynn Hardy and 2008 Pro Truck champion Jim Albert rounded out the top five.

During the post race technical inspection, however, it was determined that both Marshall and Roper were too low to the ground and both were moved to the rear of the finishing order.

DWIDUDE.Com Pro Modified 50

Mark Chrudimsky has proven over the years that he can win in anything from a school bus to a Super Late Model and he showcased his racing savvy again Saturday night in winning the “DWIDUDE.Com Pro Modified 50.”

Fifteen of the low-slung Pro Modifieds lined up at the start with some of the best driving talent in Texas set to take the green flag after a brief shower cooled things down a bit.

Justin Long and his well-known teammate Joe Aramendia were on the front row with Chrudimsky and nationally-known hotshoe Tuffy Hudson poised in row two. Michael Umscheid, who set a new Pro Modified track record at 15.107 seconds in qualifying and racing legend Chris Davidson hunkered down in row three. Just behind them the always-aggressive John Heil and veteran John Paul Kliewer lined up in row four. Ian Webster, Jim Nides, John Schultz, Bob Slezinsky, Bubba Menard, Greg Baber and Jay Guthrie rounded out the stellar field.

At the drop of the green the whole field went side-by-side for a lap or two, but at the end of the second lap Nides and Slezinsky got together in turn one and they both spun to bring out the first caution flag of the race.

On the restart there was some bumper tag as the field took the green but everyone hung on with Long out first and Chrudimsky right on his bumper. The super quick Umschied took the inside line to worm past Aramendia taking Hudson and Heil along with him as Aramendia got hung out to dry in the high groove, falling back into line in the fifth spot.

It wasn’t long before Webster looped it down the back straight and the yellow waved on lap thirteen. Hudson unexpectedly pitted as the field circled slowly under the yellow. He did not return.
It was back to business on lap 16 with Long, Chrudimsky, Umscheid, Heil, Davidson and Aramendia the top six at this point.

Shortly after racing resumed, Umscheid took a couple of long inside looks under Chrudimsky and nearly made it by at least twice, but Chrudimsky held his line and was able to hold second as the top four ran lap after lap nose-to-tail with each driver determined to advance if anyone bobbled.

At halfway it was still Long, Chrudimsky, Umscheid, Heil, Davidson, Aramendia, Schultz, Nides, Slezinsky, Baber, Menard, Guthrie and Kleiwer.
A few laps later Kliewer, Slezinsky and Baber all tangled and slid hard into the turn four tire wall in a huge cloud of tire smoke. Slezinsky hit the hardest and the track went red as the safety crew responded. Slezinsky was able to get out of the car on his own – a bit wobbly perhaps – but was taken to a local hospital for a checkup as a precautionary measure since he didn’t seem to be clicking on all eight after the hit. Later reports were positive with Slezinsky apparently in much better shape than his mangled Pro Modified.

During the red flag period lots of steam poured from Heil’s machine and he pitted after getting permission to leave the track during the red.

The top three jumped out quickly on the lap 32 restart with Davidson watching the action a few car lengths back in fourth. And he had a lot to watch as Umscheid worked Chrudimsky over hard.

Meanwhile Long was able to gain a few car lengths as he watched the excitement in his mirror.
Umscheid was unable to get by, however, so Chrudimsky turned his attention to Long, who seemed to be losing some of his handling as the laps clicked down.

With 10 to go, the track suddenly seemed to get a bit slippery and Long bobbled a bit coming off turn four. Chrudimsky got a good run down the straight and headed towards the inside line as the pair prepared to enter turn one. They made contact, Long spun and came to rest at the bottom of the track midway between turn one and turn two where Davidson, with no place to go slid - more or less gently - into the front of Long’s machine.

Race control ruled that Chrudimsky had the line and sent Long to the rear for the contact that brought out a caution. That gave Chrudimsky the lead with only ten laps remaining.

The next ten laps were a picture of clean, hard racing with two experienced drivers putting on a classic show for the good crowd on hand.

Umscheid stalked and studied Chrudimsky’s line for the next few laps and with five to go turned up the heat. He looked inside. He looked outside, then inside again, but Chrudimsky never wavered from his line.

Finally - on the last lap - Umscheid gave Chrudimsky a love tap coming off turn four, but Mark “The Wildman” Chrudimsky didn’t seem to notice and took the checkered with Umscheid right there next to him. A few car lengths back Davidson, Aramendia and Webster rounded out the top five.

In other racing action at Thunderhill Raceway on Saturday, Charles Aikin hung on to win the 50-lap Texas Super Racing Series Allison Legacy feature over former Pro Truck champion Rusty Mirth and Charles Evans, Jr.

Mike Merrell wheeled his VW Scirocco to victory in the 20-lap Texas Pro Sedan feature after Tom Johnson, who dominated the first portion of the race, pitted during a caution period.

Mike Steinman snapped Lyndon Kirk’s win streak in the 20-lap NasKart main event. Richard Gonzales ran a steady race to finish second.

Allen Alexander outgunned points leader Clint LaFont to claim take the 40-lap ASA A-Line Super Stock feature win, Anthony Gordon took the Thunder Stock feature after apparent race winner David Sevilla, Jr., was deemed “too low” during a post race tech inspection, and J.C. Umscheid beat Brandon Gaither to the finish line in the 20lap Grand Stock event.

KYLE, TX (November 14, 2008) – In today’s economic situation, everyone is looking for more affordable ways to do things – and Thunderhill Raceway is no exception.

Starting with the 2009 racing season, Thunderhill Raceway will be introducing a new “Mini Stock” class to bring a new, affordable opportunity to potential racers.

The Mini Stocks will be a novice class that consists of domestic or imported compact, front-wheel drive cars. These cars will be completely factory stock, with safety modifications only. An unaltered VIN plate must be on the vehicle – along with the factory installed engine, transmission, wheels, etc. No aftermarket parts of any kind will be allowed.

A few safety modifications will be required – including a four-point roll cage, driver door bars and a window net. A racing seat and five-point racing harness are highly recommended.

“If you’ve always wanted to be a race car driver and you don’t want to spend a lot of money, here’s your chance to be a part of the action,” said Rick Day, Race Director at Thunderhill Raceway. “You can find a lot of great deals on this type of car and spend a minimal amount of time and money to get it ready to race.”

The detailed rules for this new class will be announced at the Drivers’ Rules and Registration meeting on Saturday, November 22, at 4 p.m., in the THR Garage Lounge. Drivers will be able to register and reserve a car number for this new class at this meeting. The complete schedule for 2009 will also be announced during the meeting.

Thunderhill Raceway and TSRS Late Models gearing up for 2009 Racing Season

KYLE, TX (November 12, 2008) – Thunderhill Raceway (THR) and the TSRS Late Models have recently ended their 2008 racing season activities, and plans are already being made for 2009 – starting with a Drivers’ Rules and Registration meeting on Saturday, November 22, at 4 p.m., in the THR Garage Lounge.

During the November 22 meeting, the Thunderhill Raceway and TSRS Late Model drivers will be given an overview of the upcoming season, and the 2009 rules will also be available. Drivers may also submit their 2009 registrations at the meeting to reserve their 2009 car numbers.

The 2009 THR schedule will also be released at the meeting – along with an announcement on the 2008 THR/TSRS Award Banquet date, special events, etc.

Mary Ann Naumann, Thunderhill Raceway’s Owner/Promoter, is excited about the upcoming racing season.

“We know there’s been concern about the future of racing in South Texas due to the current economic conditions, but we want to assure everyone, with your support, that we’ll be back in 2009,” said Naumann. “We hope our drivers and fans will be back to support us next year as we continue to find ways to make local stock car racing an exciting, affordable form of entertainment for everyone to enjoy!”

ASA Association Member Track Champion preparing for his tryout with Joe Gibbs Racing

AMERICAN SPEED ASSOCIATION MEMBER TRACK CHAMPION PREPARING FOR HIS TRYOUT WITH JOE GIBBS RACING

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Friday, November 07, 2008) – Cary Stapp, the 2008 American Speed Association Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil Member Track National Champion, is keeping a close eye on his calendar and getting anxious as he is getting close to his tryout with Joe Gibbs Racing. Stapp will get his opportunity to show his talents on Wednesday, November 19th at South Boston Motor Speedway in South Boston, VA.

“I’m anxious, very anxious,” Stapp recently stated. “I’m not really nervous about it, this is going to be a once in a lifetime experience. Actually, I am more anxious about getting in the car then being nervous.”

Stapp will have a busy three days ahead of him. On Monday, November 17th, Stapp will go to the Joe Gibbs Racing shop where he will receive a tour, get fitted in the car he will be testing, meet with representatives from Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil, and JD Gibbs. There will be photos and dinner later.

“They called me and asked for my measurements, they want to make sure I fit well in the car,” Stapp stated. “Getting the opportunity to visit the shop, right there will make the trip worth it. I have seen pictures of their shop on the internet and it’s like the dream shop I wished I had.”

Stapp has also been doing his homework on the famous South Boston Motor Speedway. “Trey Mitchell, who races at South Boston, used to race at Thunderhill Raceway in Kyle, TX, so I, got a hold of him and got some pointers,” Stapp said. “He is a local Texas guy who moved up there and he said it’s a lot my home track. The fast groove is on the bottom. It’s a lot like Thunderhill but not so technical.”

His goal is to get into Gibbs development program but he is honored at just having the opportunity to showcase his talents to one of the top teams in NASCAR. “If anything, I am going to come away with a lot great memories, like I said earlier this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Stapp is a full-time electrician who is married to his wife Kelli and has a 13-year-old stepson named Trey and a 10-year-old daughter Mikala.

“I get three weeks of vacation a year, and the few days I have left will be used for this opportunity,” Stapp stated with a smile in his voice.

“All of us at Joe Gibbs Racing are looking forward to meeting Cary Stapp,” JD Gibbs stated. “We are looking forward to seeing him showcase his talents behind the wheel of one of our Toyota Camry’s. Not only will it be a great opportunity for him, but it is a unique opportunity for Joe Gibbs Racing in our continuous search of finding the best talent racing at short tracks across the United States today.”

“Wildman” Chrudimsky ready to tear up some stuff at Crash-A-Rama

KYLE, TX (October 20, 2008) – “Wildman” Mark Chrudimsky is getting his motorized weapons ready for the Crash-A-Rama on Sunday, October 26, at Thunderhill Raceway (THR).

Chrudimsky normally competes in an open-wheeled Pro Modified race car, but he’s switching to some different wheels for the first-ever THR Crash-A-Rama on Sunday.

“I’m planning on bringing three or four cars for several of the events – and probably at least a couple of buses, including my ‘Bikini Bus,’” said Chrudimsky. “And I’ll be driving in all of the events, except the Demolition Derby.”

One of the Crash-A-Rama events is an Enduro Race, which is a 200-lap or two-hour event (whichever comes first). The caution flag will not be used during the race, so drivers will have to maneuver around stalled cars on the track, hazardous track conditions, etc., to battle for the lead.

Other events include a Car-Boat race, a Bus Race, Chain Race and Demolition Derby.

The cars competing in the Car-Boat race will be towing an unsecured boat on a trailer. If the boat comes off the trailer during the race, it will not be cleared from the track. Competing drivers will have to negotiate around the obstacles on the track to continue racing.

School buses will be used in the Bus Race, and inertia going into the turns will definitely make the buses hard to handle on THR’s 3/8-mile asphalt oval. In the Chain Race, two cars will be chained together. Both drivers will have to work together to make their way around the track. Cars competing in the Demolition Derby will intentionally wreck each other and required to make continuous contact with other cars.

Chrudimsky is really looking forward to competing in the Crash-A-Rama events especially after his experience at San Antonio Speedway (SAS) a couple of years ago.

“When I drove in the Crash-A-Rama at San Antonio Speedway, I had a blast,” Chrudimsky proclaimed. “It was just flat-out fun not having to worrying about how much stuff I messed up. And I’m ready to have some fun again. I know the crowd wants to see stuff getting torn up, and I plan to do my part in keeping them entertained. Whatever happens, happens. If my car (or bus) starts overheating or gets really torn up, I’ll just drive it until it dies.”

Chrudimsky has already come up with his race strategy. “If someone runs into me, I’ll make sure I run back into them,” joked Chrudimsky. “Heck, we’ll just make it a rolling Demo Derby!”

Thunderhill Raceway’s Race Director, Rick Day, remembers Chrudimsky’s wild and crazy performance at the SAS Crash-A-Rama.

“Mark stole the show that night,” commented Day with a hearty chuckle. “The more stuff he tore up that night, the more the crowd liked it. When he’d go crazy on the track, the fans went crazier in the stands!”

THR’s grandstand gates open at noon, with the races slated to start at 2 pm.

Rebecca Cooper, CPA, takes on a 'taxing' new sport at Thunderhill Raceway

(Austin, TX) Most people relate paying their taxes to the April 15th “due” date.

However, for accountants like Rebecca Cooper, CPA, the tax season (technically) doesn’t end until Oct. 15. Thus, the spunky CPA of Thunderhill Raceway (THR) is very much looking forward to the upcoming Crash-A-Rama at Thunderhill Raceway (www.thunderhillraceway.com) Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. at the 3/8th-mile asphalt oval located just south of Austin in Kyle, Texas.

“I can’t wait to get out there and drive in the demolition derby,” Cooper proclaimed in a fun, kidding manner. “I’ve got some frustrations and stress to release - I can’t wait to get out there and bang some cars around!”

Cooper has been with THR for five years and, in that time, has given away thousands of dollars to drivers and fans in support of local racing. She loves her time with local racing and enjoys a great friendship among the many track officials, drivers, families and fans.

But the life-long Mark Martin fan always enjoys a friendly “rivalry” with the drivers of THR and looks forward to “trading paint” with some veteran drivers. She’s also said there may be a “revenge factor” for some: Cooper has sent some folks packing for not wearing their wrist bands.

“I’ll bet there are a few folks who’d like ‘a shot’ at me,” Cooper declared. “I hope there’s a ton of drivers (in the Demo Derby). I hope every driver who has a car comes out and enters. I challenge them to step up and take the track – I’ll be waiting for them!”

One of THR’s drivers, Cooter Lynch, is responsible for getting Cooper’s car ready for the event while the Austin CPA has already landed a sponsorship – Señor Salsa. And as if wearing a “target” on her car isn’t enough, Cooper plans on participating in the Dunk Booth that will be set up in the grandstand area before the Demo Derby.

“Oh yah,” Cooper stated with a big grin. “I”ll be yelling and teasing them (while sitting in the dunk booth). I will antagonize them and I will tick someone off – in a nice way, of course. It will add to the fun, and I think anyone who comes out to Thunderhill that day will have a great time no matter what.”

There’s certainly plenty planned for the day. Grandstand gates will open at noon. The following information – along with Demo Derby Rules – can be found on the track’s web site, www.thunderhillraceway.com.

CRASH-A-RAMA EVENTS

Enduro Race – This race is a 200-lap or two-hour event, whichever comes first. The cars competing will be allowed minimum modifications for safety purposes only. The caution (yellow) or red flag will not be used, except for fire emergencies and/or endangerment to a driver. Drivers will have to maneuver around stalled cars on the track, hazardous track conditions, etc., to battle for the lead.

Car-Boat Race – The cars competing will be towing an unsecured boat on a trailer. If a car loses the boat and/or trailer, it will be ineligible to continue in the competition. Boats, cars and trailers, will not be cleared from the track during the race, so participating drivers will have to negotiate around the obstacles on the track to continue racing.

Bus Race – School buses will race each other around the track. Inertia going into the turns will definitely make the buses hard to handle on the 3/8-mile asphalt oval.

Chain Race – Two cars will be chained together. Although both cars must have engines, only the lead car can have the engine running. Both cars are required to have working foot brakes – for obvious reasons.

Demolition Derby – Cars competing in the Derby will intentionally wreck each other, and the last car running will be declared the winner. Each car must make contact with another car at least once every two (2) minutes or the driver will be disqualified.

(Austin, TX) Heath Stewart (Del Valle, TX) and Jake Kruger (Bastrop, TX) pretty much have the TSRS (Texas Super Racing Series) points championship and Rookie of the Year (respectively) titles wrapped up before the season-ending 75-lap race during Saturday’s Allstate Texas Stock Car Spectacular at Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX).

TSRS rules state each driver can drop their lowest-points race of the season. Doing that, all Stewart and Kruger have to do is take the green flag during Saturday’s finale to wrap up their hard-earned championships.

Still, there’s plenty of drama going into the Allstate Texas Stock Car Spectacular for Texas’ premier touring late-model series:

After winning the Fast Qualifier Award during last Saturday’s “Deb Williams 75,” Stewart said: “Based on tonight, we’ll more than likely see someone set a new (qualifying record) next weekend.” Thus, the mark set by San Antonio’s Joe Aramendia last Oct. 27 (a time of 15.317) is in danger during Friday’s qualifying.
Speaking of Aramendia…his nephew, Brian Moczygemba, won last weekend’s TSRS race. That victory ties the student (Moczygemba) with the teacher (Aramendia) at two career victories apiece. Both drivers are expected to compete in Saturday’s season finale. Will the student pass the teacher?
Speaking of career wins….Chris Schild (Leander, TX) remains tied at the top of the TSRS charts with Tommy Gural (Elgin, TX). Both drivers have eight wins apiece. Schild, the 2005 series champion, has won at least once series race the past three seasons. Schild, incidentally, has won the most career Fast Qualifier Awards with 13; Heath Stewart is second with eight.
If Stewart can win Saturaday’s race, he’ll have five career victories – that would put him in a tie with Jeff Pollard and put him one behind his car owner, Bobby Joe New, the reigning TSRS champion.

Close battles wind up 2008 racing season at Allstate Texas Stock Car Spectacular

KYLE, TX (Sept. 23, 2008) – Stock car fans all over Texas are in for a real treat with two full days of racing action at Thunderhill Raceway (THR) this weekend – the last racing weekend of the 2008 regular season.

Allstate will present the Texas Stock Car Spectacular this year, and the jam-packed agenda will feature 10 classes of race cars and trucks over a two-day span – starting at noon on Friday (Sept. 26) and ending with several feature events on Saturday night (Sept. 27).

One of the THR’s tightest track-championship battles will be a team affair by the Grand Stocks, and the top drivers will get two shots at mixing up the points’ chase.

The Grand Stock drivers will compete in two separate feature events – one each on Friday night and Saturday night. The best finish in either race will be used to determine the 2008 track champion, so any of the Grand Stock drivers could put on a last-minute charge for the points’ lead.

Currently, the Premier Motorsports team has three drivers at the top of the Grand Stock standings. Homer Pitner (New Braunfels, TX) is in the lead with 1,274 points, James Aramendia (San Antonio, TX) follows with 1,250 points and Carolyn Aramendia (San Antonio, TX) sits third with 1,192 points.

Although Pitner is not directly related to the Aramendia clan, he works for Aramendia Motorsports, owned by Carolyn’s husband, Joe. And James is Carolyn’s brother-in-law, so these team members really get to experience some “family-friendly” competition on the track.

Pitner is a bit apprehensive about this weekend’s races. “Right now, I’m not sure who will win the championship,” he said. “I’ve had a couple of bad finishes the last two races, and I think any of us has a shot at taking over the points’ lead. Carolyn seems to have the fastest car, but James has been more consistent throughout the year. With the double-race format for this weekend, it’s anybody’s guess on how things will end up, especially with the large car counts and close racing.”

The Thunder Stock class drivers have also faced some tough competition this year, and Joey Tschoerner (Bartlett, TX) has been occupying the top spot for most of the season. But Gary Chancellor (Bastrop, TX) isn’t far behind.

Tschoerner will go into Saturday’s race with a narrow 38-point lead over Chancellor, and the battle for the championship will all ride on qualifying rounds and one last feature race. Tschoerner has claimed two feature victories this year while Chancellor has visited the Winner’s Circle three times. Both drivers have shown that they know what it takes to win.

Tschoerner is feeling pretty confident about this weekend’s race and has high expectations for holding on to the points’ leads.

“I feel good about this weekend, and I think I can hang on to the lead as long as I don’t break (my car) or get put out of the race by someone else,” said Tschoerner. “I know Gary is a good competitor and I feel he’ll race me hard and clean for the Thunder Stock championship title. If I finish in at least the top 7-8 positions, I should end up in good shape in the points’ race.”

Another factor that might throw these two drivers a curve ball are some possible bonus points (5) that will be awarded to the driver who qualifies the fastest and/or breaks the track record.

The points’ battle for the ASA A-Line Super Stock has already been decided. With seven feature wins and 14 top-five finishes, Cary Stapp (San Marcos, TX) already has that championship title in the bag. However, Stapp is currently leading in the ASA Short Track National Championship battle so another win could help him clinch this coveted title.

Joining the local classes at the Allstate Texas Stock Car Spectacular will be the fast and exciting TSRS Late Models, ExpressJet Pro Modifieds, Pro Trucks, Texas Pro Sedans, Dwarf Car Racing Series of Texas, SportMods and NasKarts. Preceded by qualifying rounds, the races will start at 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.

A wild and crazy post-season event – called Crash-A-Rama – is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 26, at 2 pm. Included in this event are a Demolition Derby, Enduro Race, Bus Race, Car-Boat Race and Chain Race.

Anticipation builds for ASA National Championship title

Cary Stapp adds another victory to his resume

KYLE, TX (Sept. 22, 2008) – Following his victory in his ASA A-Line Super Stocks at Thunderhill Raceway (THR) on Aug. 30, Cary Stapp (San Marcos, TX) grabbed the lead in the national standings for the ASA Joe Gibbs championship title.

And the winning didn’t stop there. Stapp claimed first- and second-place finishes on Sept. 6 in double-feature events.

This past Saturday night, Stapp visited the Winner’s Circle yet again – for the seventh time this season. Fourteen cars took the green flag and Stapp started in the seventh position. He took the lead from Duane Toyne (Leander, TX) on Lap 11 of the 40-lap feature race.

“I followed Duane as I worked my way up to the front. He created the holes, and I followed closely behind him,” Stapp commented. “When Duane took the lead, he held his own and I had to try several times to pass him. Even though he’s a friend of mine, Duane is a racer first. I knew he wouldn’t just give me the lead without a challenge.”

Stapp’s latest victory gave him the THR track championship in the ASA A-Line Super Stocks with one race to go. However, the national standings don’t get posted until Tuesday each week, so Stapp is forced to sit on “pins and needles” for a couple more days to see if his latest victory will help him maintain his national lead.

“I was concerned about the car count on Saturday,” said Stapp. “I know that Linny White from Orange Show Speedway (San Bernadino, CA) is close behind me in both the regional and national rankings. And he’s been doing well while running in bigger (car) fields. I just hope my win on Saturday will help me stay on top.”

Looming on the horizon is the final race of the 2008 season – the Allstate Texas Stock Car Spectacular, set for September 26 and 27 at Thunderhill Raceway. This race could affect Stapp’s standings in the regional competition. Although another possible victory this weekend could be a big boost to Stapp’s point average, the team is unsure of what they’re up against with all of the other tracks involved in this title championship quest. ASA member tracks all over the nation have a September 28 deadline to complete their races for this title.

At least 14 races are required to give drivers a fair chance to win the coveted title, so getting the most recent race in the record books has helped Stapp breathe a small sigh of relief. But he’s not sure how the additional race next weekend will affect his national standings.

“From what I’ve read, I’m not sure how my finish in the 15th race will be figured into the point average,” Stapp stated. “We’ll be lining up by qualifying results instead of point averages, so hopefully I can come up with a good finish, especially since I’m uncertain how a bad finish next week would affect my point average.”

Chase Stapp, who is Cary’s crew chief and “race analyst,” is feeling a little more hopeful about this brother’s chances to win the national title.

“I think we now know a little more about what it takes to win the national title and I’m feeling a little better about it than I was a few weeks ago,” said Chase. “I really didn’t think Cary had a chance about a month ago, and I was thinking that a driver in the East Region would come out on top. But now our biggest threat is coming from someone in our own (West) region. If Cary manages to hold on to the national lead going into the last weekend of the competition, it will certainly be a good thing.”

Several known factors that are considered in the performance indicator computation include track point standings (must be the track’s leader in points), the field sizes (number of cars competing in each race), the starting/finishing positions, the number of races entered and the number of wins and top finishes.

Since Stapp’s victory on Saturday clinched his championship title in the track’s ASA A-Line Super Stocks class, one factor is in the bag towards the national title.

The ASA Short Track National Champion will win bragging rights for a year (actually, a lifetime), the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil Champion Award, a cash prize and something that money cannot buy – a test session with Joe Gibbs Racing and a chance to show his talents to those who can get things done at the pinnacle of motorsports.

Much of Stapp’s success on the track can be attributed to his family who helps give his team the winning combination. “I’m responsible for setting up the car,” said Chase. “Dad (Ed) helps provide the finances and Cary can drive well in anything we put together for him.”

Cary is also competing as a rookie the TSRS Late Models and he finished eighth in the “Deb Williams 75” on Saturday night.

TPS at THR - September 27 - $500 to win

Saturday night, September 27th will mark the next-to-last 2008 season race for the Texas Pro Sedans touring series. TPS will hold the tenth event of their 33rd consecutive racing season at Thunderhill Raceway as part of the 12th annual “Stock Car Spectacular”.

TPS Race & Administrative Director, Neil Upchurch recently announced that $500 is guaranteed to the winner of the 33 lap TPS feature race in the “THR Stock Car Spectacular” race. In addition, the field purse has been significantly increased over traditional field purse payouts for the expected twenty car starting field.

Upchurch credited the $500 to win purse to “Stock Car Spectacular ”primary sponsor: Tom Lorenz of Hoosier Tires Southwest and Jerry Spencer, Hoosier Tires at Thunderhill Raceway, and to “Stock Car Spectacular ” Associate Race Sponsors: Richard and Bea Villanueva of San Antonio; Nelson Skinner, Attorney at Law, San Antonio; Buggy Warehouse of San Antonio thru Steve Foster.

The race will nearly determine the Texas Pro Sedans 2008 Championship. A total of 23 points is within reach of a driver scoring a “clean sweep” on September 27th by earning all 3 pre-race bonus points, breaking the existing TPS track record of 16.832 seconds worth 3 points and then by winning the race and 17 points.

An extremely close 2008 “Rookie-of-the-Year” title chase is being contested between Lisa Sandoval of Corpus Christi and Bob Sherland from San Antonio. Only two points separate the two TPS “Rookies”.

Thunderhill Raceway sponsoring Food Drive to help with Hurricane Ike Disaster

KYLE, TX (September 17, 2008) – Much of the Texas coastal area felt the catastrophic effects of Hurricane Ike, and the racing community is all set to help out the survivors of this disaster. A Food Drive is scheduled at Thunderhill Raceway this Saturday (September 20), starting at 9 am.

This Food Drive is being coordinated with the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas, and the Food Bank is excited about the potential donations by the Thunderhill Raceway drivers, crews, staff and fans – and the general public.

Boxes will be placed at the front entrance of the race track located off IH-35 at Yarrington Road (Exit #210) in Kyle, TX, to make it convenient for anyone to stop by and drop off food and personal items for the evacuees. Suggested items needed are cash donations, bottled water, granola bars, canned meat (pop-top lids), peanut butter, diapers and wipes (adult and baby) and personal car items, such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, feminine products, soap, shampoo and conditioner.

Lori Fitch has taken the lead in coordinating this drive for Thunderhill Raceway. Lori’s husband, Richard, drives the #07 Grand Stock, and this racing family has often helped with Thunderhill Raceway special events and projects.

“We’re all very concerned about the people who were affected by Hurricane Ike,” said Fitch. “I’ve heard about big food drives in the north Austin area, but I hadn’t heard about any donation sites in the South Austin, Buda, Kyle or San Marcos areas. I know people want to help, and we want to make it easier for them to make donations – without having to drive across town or another city.”

Donations will be securely handled by Fitch and the Capital Area Food Bank. Anyone who makes a monetary donation may request a receipt from the Food Bank, and an on-line registration process has been established to track all donations.

Thunderhill Raceway is also participating in a city-wide effort by the media in the North Austin area today by donating 2,000 admission tickets to the evacuees for this Saturday’s race.

This Saturday’s racing event features the TSRS Late Models “DW 75” and will include local classes, along with the ever-popular JRA Kids’ Bike and Power Wheel Races. The grandstand gates open at 4 pm and qualifying and heat races will begin at 6 pm.

(Austin, TX) The Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS) will finish its high-charged 2008 racing season on back-to-back weekends starting this Saturday night with the “DW 75” at Thunderhill Raceway (THR), a 3/8th-mile asphalt oval in Kyle, TX.

“We’re looking forward to some great racing action both this weekend and next weekend – for the Sept. 27th Texas Stock Car Spectacular,” stated TSRS Owner/Founder Mary Ann Naumann. “This will be two great weekends for racing, with the finish of the season and the cooler weather approaching. We hope everyone turns out to give our drivers the great support they deserve the next two weekends.”

Naumann added, “We’re calling this week’s race the ‘DW 75’ for a reason but we’re not going to reveal why until Friday morning. Race fans are welcome to take a guess what it stands for.” Some notes about TSRS going into the DW 75:

This will be the first race for the series since Aug. 30, when La Vernia’s Cody Smith won the “Back to School 75” at THR.

Smith was the sixth different TSRS race winner in 2008 – that’s the most since 2006. There were eight (8) different winners in the series in 2004 and 2005.
Chris Schild (#7) of Leander is tied with Tommy Gural for the all-time number of wins (8) by one driver in the series. Schild is expected to race in both upcoming races. Schild also holds the all-time series record for being fast qualifier (13 times). Schild is the 2005 series champion; Gural won the TSRS title the next season (2006).
Heath Stewart (Del Valle, TX) holds a 114-point lead over Robert Barker (Boerne, TX) going into the final two series races. Stewart drives for former TSRS series champion Bobby Joe New (2007).
The chase for the ’08 Rookie of the Year title remains close – Dillon Spreen (Boerne) and Jake Kruger (Bastrop, TX) are separated by just 31 points. Kruger wasn’t able to start the first race of the season and has one less start than Spreen.

Naumann added, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who suffered losses during Hurricane Ike last weekend. We pray that everyone involved will get back on their feet and get back to their normal lives in a timely manner.”

Thunderhill Raceway event postponed by Hurricane Ike

KYLE, TX (September 10, 2008) – Thunderhill Raceway was all set to present the A-Line Auto Parts Night at the Races this Saturday (September 13), but Mother Nature looks like she will be disrupting any outdoor activities planned for this upcoming weekend.

Hurricane Ike is expected to make landfall on the Texas coast as early as Friday afternoon, and most of South and Central Texas will likely feel its effects – including Thunderhill Raceway.

Saturday’s racing events – including the 75-lap feature race by the TSRS Late Models – will be postponed until the following Saturday, September 20.

Mary Ann Naumann, Thunderhill Raceway’s Owner/Promoter, feels that making this early decision will help the racing teams deal with the uncertainty and possible effects of the hurricane.

“Although it may seem that we’re making our decision to postpone a bit early, we feel it’s in the best interest of the safety of our teams,” said Naumann. “Most of the current weather predictions indicate tropical force winds and heavy rains from the coast all the way up through Kyle and North Texas. We just don’t want to do anything to jeopardize the safety of our fans and race teams. I’ve even heard that some of the race teams have already headed to the coast to help move out their families.”

Cary Stapp attempts to widen gap on ASA West Regional Championship lead

KYLE, TX (September 7, 2008) – Cary Stapp (San Marcos, TX) has turned in some impressive results at Thunderhill Raceway (THR) during the 2008 racing season – and this past Saturday (September 6) was no exception.

Stapp had regained the lead in the ASA Joe Gibbs West Regional standings following his win a week ago (August 30), and he went into Saturday’s ASA A-Line Super Stock Twin 25 races with high hopes for yet another win – or two.

During the first Super Stock feature race, Stapp fought hard for the lead. He started in the 11th position and charged forward on the 3/8-mile asphalt oval – settling in for the second position during the final few laps. Young Levi Krauss (Schertz, TX) managed to hold off Stapp and claimed his first feature win of his rookie season.

Stapp faced some tough competition again in the second feature race – charging hard to the front from the 10th starting position. Stapp grabbed the second position with only four laps to go, and he again finished in the second position – behind Doug Ayers (Pflugerville, TX). Ayers was charged with a technical infraction due to ride height during a post-race inspection, and Stapp was awarded the winning trophy.

Stapp is hoping that his strong finishes on Saturday night will help him maintain his regional lead and improve his chances to move up the ladder in the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship.

“Although I felt like I was under a lot of pressure to get to the front each race, it was really fun,” said Stapp. “The racing was rougher than usual, and I had to drive hard all the way from the drop of the green flag to the finish. Normally, I use a lot of patience to get to the front, but I felt I had to make my moves quickly to get a good finish. I really hope that getting a first (by default) and a second-place finish, it will help my standings with ASA, especially with only two more races to go.”

With six wins and 13 Top Five finishes, Stapp is closing in on Jimmy Mullins from Franklin County Speedway (Callaway, VA) who is currently leading the national standings with a performance indicator of 4.607. Stapp was shown with a 4.3652 point average in last week’s ASA standings, and he holds the lead in the Thunderhill Raceway Super Stock points’ race – with a solid 313 point lead ahead of Toyne.

Several factors are considered in the performance indicator computation – including track point standings (must be in track points’ lead), the field sizes (number of cars competing in each race), the starting/finishing positions, the number of races entered and the number of wins and top finishes. The national competition was introduced by ASA earlier this year, and it’s the first time the Thunderhill Raceway drivers have been eligible to compete for the coveted national and regional titles.

In other racing action, Mike Farrish (Copperas Cove, TX) grabbed the feature win in the Grand Stocks. Shawn Cannon (Fourney, TX) claimed the win in the first Allison Legacy Race Series (ALRS) feature race, and Taylor Brandes (Garden Ridge, TX) found his way to victory lane in the second ALRS feature race.

Thunderhill Raceway will be back in action this Saturday night (September 13) – featuring the local classes and the ever-popular TSRS Late Models and JRA Kids’ Bike Races. Qualifying and heat races begin at 6 p.m.

The September 6 event was added to help the ASA A-Line Super Stock drivers meet the minimum requirements for the ASA Short Track National Championship sponsored by Joe Gibbs Racing Oil. “The season length is used in calculating the driver point average,” stated a press release issued by ASA Public Relations earlier this year. “A ‘full season’ is set at 14 events, and drivers competing in less are penalized by dividing the number of races competed in by 14. All races count towards the ASA Short Track National Championship, so drivers are encouraged to run at least 14 events this year, and more if possible, to help accumulate the maximum points.”

Other factors that are considered in the point average formula are the finishing position in the feature race, the size of the field (number of cars competing), the starting versus finishing position and the number of feature wins.

“We’re excited about our Super Stock drivers being a part of the ASA national championship, and we want to make sure that we do our part in providing them the opportunity to compete fairly toward the regional and national titles,” said Mary Ann Naumann, THR Owner/Promoter. “It would be a real honor to see one of our local drivers capture the coveted national or regional title.”

In addition to heat and feature events for the ASA A-Line Super Stocks, races will also be held for the Grand Stocks and the Allison Legacy Racing Series.

The other event that has been added to the schedule is a Crash-A-Rama that will be held on Sunday, October 26.

This event will end the 2008 racing season in a very unique format. The tentative schedule for the Crash-A-Rama will include a Demo Derby, Enduro Race, Chain Race, Boat Race and a Bus Race.

“We wanted to offer our fans a very unusual, entertaining event to top off our 2008 season,” commented Naumann. “We feel our regular fans will enjoy this wild and crazy event, and we hope we’ll also draw a lot of new fans to our facility.”

More information about the Crash-A-Rama – including rules and racing procedures – will be issued soon.

The next race scheduled for Thunderhill Raceway will be held this Saturday, August 30, starting at 7:00 p.m. The racing action will feature the Thunderhill Raceway ASA A-Line Super Stocks, Thunder Stocks, Grand Stocks and NasKarts – along with the TSRS Late Models, Texas Pro Sedans and Allison Legacy Race Series.

Thunderhill Raceway is a 3/8-mile, asphalt D-shaped oval track that’s located at 24801 IH-35, just north of San Marcos (TX) near Yarrington Road (Exit #210).

Hot Action at Thunderhill Raceway on Saturday night

Kyle, TX (July 28, 2008) - The start of the always competitive 40-lap ASA A-Line Super Stock feature race at Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX) on Saturday night (July 26) started with Bobby LaFont and Greg Rohmer jumping out front. Chris Birmingham fell into the third position as the top five sorted out single file. As the pack stayed paired off, Clint LaFont got around Rodney Rodriguez for fourth. Caution waved on lap 6 when Brent Reeves and Terry Tschoerner tangled in turn 2. Once back to green, C. Lafont got past Birmingham for third.

Coming through the field – like a hot knife through butter – were Keith Garrett and multi-time class champ, Cary Stapp, who was glued to his bumper. As the top three inched away, the Garrett/Stapp duo picked off spots, making their way to the top five by lap 11. As C. LaFont and Rohmer battled for second, the two made contact sending Rohmer around and C. LaFont to the back. On the restart Rodriguez looped in turn 4 bringing the yellow right back out.

The top cars had just started to pull away when Rohmer had the rear axle break on lap 15, sending him around in front of the field. It didn’t take long after the green waved again before Garrett was knocking on the door for the lead. Garrett got alongside and passed by B. LaFont for the lead on lap 19, with Stapp following in his tracks. In the field, Duane Toyne and Tracy Tschoerner had their own personal battle going on for fifth as they swapped the spot.

Up front, it continued to be the Garrett-Stapp show as they pulled away to settle it between themselves. During the fight, the top two had some bumper contact, but Stapp, in a class move, backed off and allowed Garrett to regain control. It came down to a final lap shootout, with Stapp giving Garrett his best move out of turn 2, but he came up a little short, with Garrett hanging on to snag the victory.

Jason Stanley got the point at the start of the 30-lap Thunder Stock feature, while the rest of the field stayed door-to-door. Contact in the battle for second stacked up the field, with Joey Tschoerner getting spun in the back. Under the yellow, Stanley pulled off from the lead with a broken rocker. This handed the lead over to Anthony Gordon for the restart. Gary Chancellor challenged Gordon for the lead as green waved, but Chancellor had Kevin Bowen looking inside him at the same time.

Bowen got inside Chancellor for second, then alongside Gordon for the lead, taking the top spot on lap 12. Chancellor and Jeff Smith got by Gordon on lap 12, with Steve Joyce trying to take fourth from Gordon and making contact, causing a spin for a yellow. Once back to green, the top six broke into three two-car battles as the race wound down. In the final laps, those battles closed up. At the checkers, it was Bowen taking the win.

As green waved on the 17-car, 25-lap Grand Stock feature race, Michael Weaver got a big jump to the lead while the pack tried three wide. Richard Fitch and Floyd Reed got by Marcia Moore for fourth and fifth. By lap 5, the Team Aramendia freight train was on the move to the front, led by Homer Pitner. Russell Vickery got the lead away from Weaver on lap 8 as the top three ran nose to tail.

Team Aramendia continued to march forward, putting Mike Farish, then Weaver in their wake. Pitner caught and was looking high on Vickery for the lead, getting past him on lap 18. Once clear of other competitors, James and Carolyn Aramendia started their own little fight for second, running side by side on lap 20. Carolyn got the best of her brother-in-law James for second, while teammate Pitner was taking the checkers.

The Texas Pro Sedan feature began with Mike Merrell grabbing the lead as the green flag waved. Merrell and several other front runners spun on lap 1 after fluid was laid on the track. Once back to green, Jesse Sandoval faded from second, giving way to Tom Johnson, Lalo Leal, Lisa Sandoval and Ozzy Osburn. Mike Knotts, in a borrowed car, worked his way up to a top five spot by lap 5.

Knotts then began to challenge L. Sandoval for fourth. Up front Leal caught Merrell for the lead as they ran up into traffic. The two went three wide around a slower car, with Leal getting the point on lap 14. From there, Leal was able to pull away from the field and lap up to fourth on his way to the win.

Thunderhill Raceway’s 3/8TH-mile, D-shaped asphalt track was a homecoming of sorts for the Texas Super Racing Series Late Models after a month off. The Texas-based touring series held its 7th event of the year, the “Tommy Darity 75,” in memory of a lost friend and racer.

In the series’ first six events, TSRS has seen but one fast qualifier – former USRA Super Late Model champion and current TSRS points leader, Heath Stewart. However, it was former TSRS champion Chris Schild in the Splash Water Systems/Double Oak Construction/Schild Motorsports who laid down the best Lap with a time of 15.341 seconds. Stewart was second fastest with Jake Kruger, Robert Barker, Brian Moczygemba and Lloyd Alexander the top six qualifiers headed to the draw for invert.

“I have no idea where that Lap came from,” commented Schild. “We kept it in the shop over that break we had, changed oil, put new plugs in and brought it out. It liked it. The little break we had between practice and qualifying gave the track a chance to cool a little and we changed tires, so we picked up some from practice times.”

But like an animal on the hunt, Stewart stalked his competition early in the 75-Lap feature event, patiently waiting for his opportunity. Stewart jumped on the chance during Lap 13 when leader Robert Barker left the bottom open; Stewart grabbed the point on Lap 14. Schild tried to hang with Stewart during the middle portion of the race but he eventually gave way to Cody Smith late. After a late caution Stewart was able to hold off Smith to grab his fourth victory of the season.

“This is a race I wanted to win,” Stewart stated. “Tommy Darity helped me out a lot. When I first started racing he was there telling me what I was doing wrong, and what I was doing right. He was a good friend of the family and it was nice to win the race in his honor.”

“We just had a good car tonight. After qualifying I told J.R. (Croomer) we didn’t get the pole but the car had a lot of bite. The car was pretty neutral and would roll through the corners good. It may not have turned the fastest times, but it was consistent. It was the best car we’ve had this year. We focused on a long run car during practice. That’s what you need to win the race, not the pole speed. I’d rather have a car like this than those I set fast times with.”

After the top six re-draw for invert, Barker and Lloyd Alexander led the 20-car TSRS field to green. The top eight sorted out single file, with side-by-side racing continuing in the back half of the field. By Lap 5 the top three of Barker, Stewart and Schild put some distance on Smith.

Stewart began putting the pressure on Barker, who was having trouble staying in the preferred bottom groove. After a couple quick looks inside, Stewart was able to get the nose inside Barker. Barker tried to hold off Stewart on the high side, but to no avail. Schild followed Stewart by Barker for second. Heather Ables spun on Lap 14 to bring out the first caution.

Coming to the restart, Jason Hollander got turned around as the middle of the pack stacked up going into Turn 3. The next restart attempt saw Brian Moczygemba get into - and spin – Lloyd Alexander, causing a multi-car melee behind them. Alexander was given his spot back, with Moczygemba sent to the tail. Third time was a charm as racing resumed with youngster Jake Kruger getting by Alexander for fourth.

Barker’s woes continued as he gave up spots to Smith, Kruger and Adam Haugh on consecutive Laps coming to halfway. At the crossed flags it was Stewart and Schild with a gap on Smith and Kruger, while Haugh rounded out the top five. The yellow waved on Lap 42 when Michael Cullen spun and collected Allen Alexander. During caution, Barker pitted his ill handling machine.

Once back to green the top five inched away from Lloyd Alexander who was now being pressured by Bobby Teer, Jr. Smith was able to get under Schild on Lap 49 to grab second. A spin by Hollander on Lap 50 brought the yellow back out. On the restart Teer got inside L. Alexander for sixth. Leland Waddell tried to fill the hole about the same time L. Alexander was trying to close the door. The two got hooked up with both ending up in the infield, but continuing without caution.

Yellow did wave on Lap 59 when Moczygemba spun and got tagged by A. Alexander who was a victim for the second time. During the caution, Waddell caught up with L. Alexander and dumped him in turn 1, then high-tailed it for the pits. On the restart with ten to go, Stewart got a good jump on Smith who now being pressured for second by Schild.

Stewart kept inching away while Smith, Schild and Kruger ran nose to tail for second. In the battle for fifth, Haugh and Teer continued to battle it out. Moczygemba and Ables tangled on Lap 73 setting up a green, white, checkered shootout to the finish. Stewart got a half car length on Smith as green waved and full car length as the white flag waved. Smith never got close enough to mount a serious challenge as Stewart in the Southside Wrecker, Gen-Tech Generators, Lozano Brothers Race Engines, Lefthander Chassis grabbed the checkers.

Carolyn Aramendia takes on the guys at Thunderhill Raceway

KYLE, TX (July 25, 2008) – Carolyn Aramendia will be part of Saturday night’s racing action at Thunderhill Raceway (THR) – and she’s ready to tackle her male competitors on the track.

Aramendia is from San Antonio, TX, and drives the #50 white 1993 Ford Crown Victoria in the Grand Stocks, which is an entry-level class at THR. This class boasts 33 registered drivers, six of them female, making for some slim odds for a victory by the “girls.” But Aramendia is beating the odds – claiming three wins so far this year and continuing her lead in the Grand Stock 2008 points’ competition.

Aramendia was under a lot of pressure to maintain her points’ lead during the Grand Stock feature race a couple of weeks ago. She started the 25-lap Grand Stock feature race in the 12th position in a 16-car field. Aramendia fought off some tough challenges from her male counterparts on the track as she worked her way up through the field – including several attempts at outside passes. She finally took the lead on Lap 16 and held on for the win.

So far, most of Aramendia’s male competitors on the track haven’t treated her any differently. “For the most part, I don’t feel there’s a ‘ladies vs. men’ attitude on the track,” commented Aramendia. “Surprisingly, I feel like I’m being treated equally by the guys. They even take the time to congratulate me after a win or make a comment on how well I’ve done in a race.”

Some of Aramendia’s toughest challenges come from two of her Premier Motorsports teammates who also race in the Grand Stock class – Homer Pitner and James Aramendia. Pitner is currently in second place in the points’ race – trailing Aramendia by only 40 points.

Aramendia enjoys being challenged by Pitner. “Although Homer is second in points and is a tough competitor on the track, I feel he races me fairly and I don’t worry about him intentionally taking me out to get ahead in the race.”

James Aramendia – currently running third in points – is not only her teammate, but he’s also Carolyn’s brother-in-law.

“James verbally teases me a lot about taking me out,” said Carolyn. “So that makes him a bit intimidating on the track. I know he supports me in the points’ chase, but I also KNOW that he'd never just hand over a win to me or intentionally take me out. And that makes it all the more exciting.”

Aramendia has also raced against her husband, Joe, several times this year. “I have lots of fun racing against Joe, especially since I hadn’t raced against him prior to this year.”

Joe Aramendia is also part of the Premier Motorsports team, and he normally drives the #79 TSRS Late Model. Brian Moczygemba, Carolyn’s nephew and driver of the #50 TSRS Late Model, rounds out the list of drivers on the team.

Point leaders tackle tough challenges at Thunderhill Raceway

Cary Stapp and Carolyn Aramendia hustle their way to Winner’s Circle

KYLE, TX (July 14, 2008) – Saturday night’s racing action at Thunderhill Raceway (THR) presented some tough challenges to the current point leaders in the local classes – namely, Cary Stapp in the ASA A-Line Super Stocks, Carolyn Aramendia in the Grand Stocks and Joey Tschoerner in the Thunder Stocks.

Cary Stapp (San Marcos, TX) started his feature race in the ninth position. He picked off his competitors one at a time and then managed to grab the lead on Lap 9 of the 40-lap ASA A-Line Super Stock feature race – claiming his fourth feature win of the year. The gap for the lead in the local Super Stock points’ competition has now widened, and Stapp holds a commanding 159 point lead over Duane Toyne (Leander, TX).

Since Thunderhill Raceway is an ASA-sanctioned track, Stapp’s victory may help him regain his lead in the West Region in the ASA Short Track National Championship. Stapp went into Saturday’s race in the second position in the ASA West Region’s point standings, and the national results that will be posted on Tuesday evening (July 15) will include his latest win.

Carolyn Aramendia (San Antonio, TX) has been heading up the points’ competition in the Grand Stock class for several weeks, although her lead is much narrower. Following her victory on Saturday night, Aramendia is currently 40 points ahead of her teammate, Homer Pitner (New Branufels, TX).

Aramendia started the 25-lap Grand Stock feature race in the 12th position. She fought off some tough challenges from her male counterparts on the track as she worked her way up through the field – including several attempts at outside passes. Aramendia finally took the lead on Lap 16 and held on for the win.

A third place finish for Joey Tschoerner (Bartlett, TX) has helped him hold on to his points’ lead in the Thunder Stock class. Tschoerner started his feature race in the ninth position and fought some challenging battles as he advanced through the field. With only three laps to go, he was involved in an incident with Mason Teague (Paige, TX). Teague was sent to the rear, and Tschoerner was able to finish the race in the third position. Tschoerner is currently 25 points ahead of Teague.

Shawn Cannon (Forney, TX) claimed another victory in the Allison Legacy Race Series feature event. He started in the 4th position and took the lead early in the race. Cannon survived several incidents that brought out the caution flag, and he took the checkered flag in the 50-lap race.

Rusty Young (Helotes, TX) started on the outside pole for 20-lap feature race for the Dwarf Car Racing Series of Texas. After the caution flag was thrown on the first lap, Young grabbed the lead and held on for the win.

Lyndon Kirk (Austin, TX) claimed victory in the 20-lap NasKart race – holding off Travis Roberts (Denver, CO) and previous race winner, Mike Steinman (Austin, TX).

Jim Albert (Lockhart, TX) found his way to the THR Winner’s Circle for the fourth time this year in his #31 Pro Truck. Albert’s victory gives him a one-point advantage over Rusty Mirth (Austin, TX). Albert started in the third position and took over the lead early in the race.

The ExpressJet Pro Modified 35-lap feature event topped off the racing program for the night. JC Umscheid (Alvarado,TX) captured his sixth win this season and held on to his points’ lead in the Texas Pro Modified championship chase. After clocking the fastest qualifying time (15.356 seconds), Umscheid started in fourth based on a drawing for position. He took the lead on Lap 14 and finished the race several car lengths ahead of Tuffy Hudson (Ingleside, TX).

Veteran driver claims his third 2008 ASA A-Line Super Stock feature win

KYLE, TX (June 30, 2008) – After spending a hot day in the pits, Cary Stapp (San Marcos, TX) turned up the heat on the track this past Saturday night – taking on some tough challenges during the 40-lap ASA A-Line Super Stock feature race at Thunderhill Raceway.

Starting in the eighth position, Stapp managed to work his way up near the front of the pack early in the race. Doug Ayers (Pflugerville, TX) was in the lead, and Stapp attempted to pass him on Lap 14 using the inside groove. They made contact, and Ayers almost lost control of his car.

Stapp is thankful that Ayers didn’t loop his car around during the attempted pass. “Doug raced me really me hard on Saturday night,” said Stapp. “It really scared me when I tried to pass him early in the race. He got loose and almost spun out. I had to hit my brakes really hard to give him the line, and I was glad that he was able to get his car back under control.”

On the following lap, Stapp was able to make a clean pass on Ayers. He held on to the lead until the end of race – claiming his third victory of the season.

Stapp drives a 1980 Chevrolet Camaro, and he’s sponsored by Miller Lite, San Roc Signs, Robbie English Mortgage and Roadrunner Recycling. Stapp has won four championships in the Super Stocks over the past ten years, and he’s well on his way toward capturing the coveted title again this year.

Widening his lead in the ASA A-Line Super Stock points’ race at Thunderhill Raceway, Stapp is currently running 104 points ahead of Duane Toyne (Leander, TX). Although Stapp is dominating the local points’ competition, he still feels challenged by several talented drivers in the Super Stock class.

“I feel my biggest challengers in the Super Stock class this year are Shawn Paul Lehman, Duane Toyne and Keith Garrett,” commented Stapp. “I’ve raced against Shawn for the last ten years, and I know his racing style very well. He’s fast no matter what he drives. Duane has also raced against me for the past several years, and he’s getting faster each year. Although Keith is the newcomer in our class, he’s also a challenge, especially since he raced at San Antonio Speedway for quite a while before it was closed down. I don’t think I can rule out any of these guys this year.”

The ASA A-Line Super Stock class is considered the premier division at Thunderhill Raceway, and the drivers in this class are also competing in the ASA Short Track National Championship.

Stapp went into Saturday’s race in the second position in the ASA West Region’s point standings. He’s hoping his win on Saturday will move him back into the lead, although he has some concerns about the small field of cars that entered the feature race.

“I know that the car count is an important factor in determining the ASA point averages,” said Stapp. “Even though I started near the back of the pack and won the race, we didn’t have a very good car count this past weekend. I get very tense waiting for the ASA standings to post each week, but I’ll continue to give it everything I have to win the national championship.”

Stapp will make his next attempt to gain momentum in the national competition at the next race scheduled at Thunderhill Raceway – on Saturday, July 12. Starting at 7:00 p.m., the racing action will include the ASA A-Line Super Stocks, Thunder Stocks, Grand Stocks and NasKarts – along with the ExpressJet Pro Modifieds, Pro Trucks, Dwarf Car Racing Series of Texas and the Allison Legacy Race Series.

Points competition heats up at Thunderhill Raceway

KYLE, TX (June 29, 2008) – Fans were treated to impressive show for the Texas Roadhouse Night at the Races at Thunderhill Raceway (THR) on Saturday – including plenty of close, wheel-to-wheel action by the local drivers.

The Texas Pro Sedans kicked off the evening with their 20-lap feature event. Tom Johnson (Kingsland, TX) held the lead for most of the race but was penalized several positions due to a technical infraction. The current points’ leader, Mike Merrell (Kingsland, TX), was awarded the victory following the post-race inspections.

Mike Steinman (Austin, TX) claimed victory in the 20-lap NasKart race – holding off Brian Kuempel (Austin, TX) who has already won several of the NasKart events at THR this year.

The Pro Trucks were next on the agenda, and Jason Marshall (Leander, TX) took the checkered flag on the 50-lap event. Marshall was stripped of the win during a post-race technical inspection, and second-place finisher Jim Albert (Lockhart, TX) was awarded the victory.

The Pro Modified ExpressJet 50 was the featured race of the evening, and the close racing action did not disappoint the fans. Tuffy Hudson (Ingleside, TX) started on the pole, but the driver of sleek #44 black and silver machine, HE Naumann (Del Valle, TX), challenged Hudson for the lead. Naumann started in the third position and managed to slip by Hudson and Mark Chrudimsky (Hutto, TX) to take over the lead on Lap 12. JC Umscheid (Alvarado, TX) tried to squeeze under Naumann during the last few laps, but Naumann held his line to claim a narrow victory.

In the Thunder Stock feature race, young Anthony Gordon (San Antonio, TX) started on the outside pole. He grabbed the lead early in the race and managed to hold off several strong competitors – including Gary Chancellor (Bastrop, TX) and Joey Tschoerner (Bartlett, TX). Gordon made it all the way into victory lane, followed by Chancellor and Tschoerner. Mason Teague (Paige, TX) had the Thunder Stock points’ lead going into Saturday’s race, but his fifth-place finish opened the door for Tschoerner to snatch the lead – ending the night six points ahead of Teague.

The ASA A-Line Super Stocks began with a fiery situation on the first lap of their feature event. The black #18 car driven by Mickey McKim (Manchaca, TX) broke out into flames caused by a fuel spillage. The safety crews quickly extinguished the fire, and McKim was able to rejoin the field on the restart – finishing the race in the fifth position.

Cary Stapp (San Marcos, TX), the current THR A-Line Super Stock points’ leader, started the 40-lap feature race in the eighth position. Stapp quickly worked his way up through the field – grabbing the lead on Lap 15. Stapp holds a commanding lead in the Super Stocks and is currently running second in the West Region of the ASA Short Track National Championship. Saturday night’s win could possibly put Stapp back in the lead this week (regional results released on Tuesday of each week).

Seventeen Grand Stocks took the green flag for the last race of the night – a fast-paced and entertaining 25-lap feature event. The current points’ leader, Carolyn Aramendia (San Antonio, TX), started near the rear of the field (14th position) and quickly picked off her male competitors as she headed for the front. Aramendia finally worked her way up to the second position and posed a strong challenge to Art Ganss (Driftwood, TX) for the lead. Although Ganss managed to hold off Aramendia to claim the checkered flag, Aramendia is still holding a slim lead in the points’ race over her brother-in-law, James Aramendia (San Antonio, TX).

The next race scheduled for Thunderhill Raceway will be held on Saturday, July 12, starting at 7:00 p.m. The racing action will be highlighted by the ExpressJet Pro Modifieds, Pro Trucks, Dwarf Car Racing Series of Texas and the Allison Legacy Race Series– along with the Thunderhill Raceway ASA A-Line Super Stocks, Thunder Stocks, Grand Stocks and NasKarts.

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Wednesday, June 18, 2008) – The opportunity to become the inaugural ASA Member Track National Champion and the opportunity to have a test session behind the wheel of a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota is on the mind of many drivers across the 30 ASA Member Tracks in the United States. But for the two leaders in the East and West Region, each takes their season one race at a time.

On the West Region side, it was Cary Stapp of San Marcos, TX making a huge move this week after his feature win this past weekend at Thunderhill Raceway in Kyle, TX.

“I think the National Championship is awesome, I have won local track championships and it gives me an opportunity win something more,” Stapp stated. “I would to thank ASA and Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil for this opportunity.”

Stapp, who has a performance index of 2.2962 which puts him third in the overall standings, made a huge leap in the West Region as he went from third to first in just one week with his win on Saturday night.

But for Stapp, the wins don’t come easy as he has to battle his way to the front. “Mary Ann Naumann, the track owner, has us line up based on our point average and usually I am coming from the back to the front each week.”

So far this season he has lived up to that task as his worst finish in six starts is a fourth place finish.

“Its fun racing where I have to pass a lot of cars to win, more fun then starting up front every week,” Stapp stated. “It’s just one week at a time and see where we end up.”

KD Kelley of Dover, FL is off to a great start at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa. The young 51-year-old competitor is not only the East Region Leader but is the overall leader with a performance index of 2.8256.

“I just take it one week at a time,” Kelley recently stated. “My goal each week is just make sure I finish in the top five.”

Last weekend, Kelley recorded his sixth top-five finish in 11 starts this season at East Bay. “I was running third and decided to go for the win and got high and let a couple get by me, but it was another top-five finish,” Kelley recalled. So far this season he has two wins and nine top-ten finishes.

Kelley, a former motorcycle racer, started racing stock cars about 15 years ago and won the track championship at East Bay in 2006. That championship meant a lot to him and at his young age, an ASA Member Track National Championship would mean a lot.

“It would mean a lot to me. I had a heart attack about four years ago at East bay and I came back to win the championship,” Kelley recalled. “I made about 19 laps and pulled off with chest pains. I workout about three days a week at the hospital’s rehab center and today I feel like nothing ever happened. I was down for a while, but I am good to go.”

An opportunity for a test session in a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota would be a unique opportunity for Kelley, “I am not sure if they would be interested in me, especially at my age,” Kelley jokingly stated.

Second generation racer brings home a win for Father’s Day

KYLE, TX (June 18, 2008) – JC Umscheid isn’t the first racer in the family to visit the winner’s circle, but he’s certainly proud to carry on the family tradition.

Umscheid has been on a winning streak in his colorful #5 Pro Modified racecar, and he notched his fourth victory of the 2008 season at Thunderhill Raceway (THR) this past Saturday night (June 14) – just a few hours before the start of the family’s Father’s Day festivities.

The race evening got off to a good start. Umscheid set the fastest qualifying time (15.503 seconds) and then drew the pole position for the 40-lap event. But it wasn’t long until he had to face his first challenge. Justin Long started on the front row outside and managed to grab the lead at the start of the race.

“I didn’t get off to a good start,” said Umscheid. “I actually work on Justin’s car, and he’s got the same stuff as mine on his car. He just got a better start and was able to hold me off for a few laps.”

Long held onto the lead until Umscheid was able to make a clean pass on Lap 10. Umscheid then dominated the field for the rest of the race and eventually made his way into victory lane.

This 25-year-old racer from Alvarado (TX) knows that he has some tough shoes to fill. His dad, David Umscheid, is a veteran racer – claiming several championships at Longhorn Speedway, with TIDA (Texas International Drivers Association) and in the Legends Series.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without my dad,” commented Umscheid. He taught me everything I know about racing – the best teacher in the state of Texas in my opinion! I really wanted to win this race for my dad.”

Umscheid is currently leading the Texas Championship Pro Modified points’ race. His patience during Saturday’s race helped him find his way into the winner’s circle.

“We’ve been in a position to win every race this year, and it hasn’t always happened,” said Umscheid. “Sometimes I’ve made a mistake or I’ve had some bad luck during a race. Our current strategy is to lean back a little more and not tear up the car.”

Umscheid added, “I owe a lot to my car owner, Raymond Delahouysse, and to my sponsors – Tri-Lectric AC & Heating of Houston and San Antonio, Westside Performance, Swenson Racing Chassis, Omega Powder Coating, Ray’s Truck and Auto Sales, Polydyne TX-7, Davidson Motorsports and Umscheid Race Services. And I can’t forget to mention my appreciation of the support I get from my mom (Sherry) and my wife (Matty).”

Umscheid will be looking for another victory this Saturday (June 21) in the Fiesta Mart 60 at Houston Motorsports Park. The next ExpressJet Pro Modified race at Thunderhill Raceway will be held on Saturday, June 28.

Thunderhill Raceway eliminates Grand Stock claim process

KYLE, TX (June 11, 2008) –The Grand Stock class at Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX) has gone through several changes since its introduction several years ago – and so has the economy. The continued growth in this entry-level class has created a need for an update on the claim process.

Under the current set of rules, any Grand Stock car may be claimed after a race by a non-competitor for $1,000. The purpose of this “claimer” rule is to ensure that the Grand Stock cars are built with stock parts instead of the more expensive racing parts. For example, the engines must match the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) plate on the original car, and no high-performance engines or parts of any kind are allowed.

Mary Ann Naumann, THR Owner/Promoter, feels this change is important for the continued growth of this class.

“The Grand Stocks have become a vital part of entertaining the Thunderhill Raceway fans,” said Naumann. “We feel the Grand Stocks are helping us succeed in putting on a great show for the fans, and this class has simply outgrown itself. We know that our drivers put a lot of time and effort in building their cars, and we no longer want to force them to give up their cars due to a claim at the end of a race.”

The elimination of the claim rule will require the technical staff to place a stronger emphasis on rule compliance.

“Our Grand Stock drivers need to understand that we’ll have to be a lot tougher with the technical inspection process by eliminating the claim rule,” Naumann added. “Even though we’ll no longer have the claim rule, we’re not relaxing the need for complete compliance with the posted rules for this class.”

The Grand Stocks will be racing action at Thunderhill Raceway this Saturday (June 14). Qualifying will begin at 6:00 p.m., and the racing agenda will also include the Thunderhill Raceway ASA A-Line Super Stocks, Thunder Stocks and NasKarts. The Pro Trucks, ExpressJet Pro Modifieds and the Dwarf Car Racing Series of Texas will also be part of the racing action.

KYLE, TX (June 3, 2008) – The 4th Annual TSRS Operation Interdependence (OI)® 75 Race presented by Chuck Nash highlighted last Saturday night’s racing action at Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX).

Operation Interdependence® is an organization that provides a means for delivering support in the form of Civilian Rations® (c-rats®). These “treats” – and notes from home – are regularly sent to deployed forces by OI®.

The Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS) is known as the premier Late Model asphalt touring series of Texas, and its drivers showed the racing fans some close, exciting action during the OI® 75 Race.

Heath Stewart (Del Valle,TX) gained the lead on Lap 68 and held off the hard-charging pole sitter Robert Barker (Boerne, TX) during the last few laps of the 75-lap race – notching off his second TSRS victory of the 2008 season. Stewart also regained the TSRS points lead following this past weekend’s event.

The Texas Pro Sedans were next in line, and points’ leader Mike Merrell (Kingsland, TX) led the race all the way from the green to the checkered. Mike Steinman (Austin,TX) claimed the win in the 20-lap NasKarts event.

Four female drivers competed in the 25-lap Grand Stock feature event – including the current points’ leader Carolyn Aramendia (San Antonio, TX), Tammy Thames (Bastrop, TX), Kris Wilson (Austin, TX) and Marcia Moore (Cedar Creek, TX). But one of the “guys” – Homer Pitner (New Braunfels, TX) – took the lead on Lap 4 and held on for the win – finishing ahead of Aramendia by just a car length.

Following an incident on the first lap, the Allison Legacy Race Series drivers completed their 35-lap race with no additional caution flags. Shawn Cannon (Forney, TX) claimed his second win in a row at Thunderhill Raceway.

One of the most exciting races of the night was the ASA A-Line Super Stock 40-lap feature race. Following a start in the 11th position, Keith Garrett (New Braunfels, TX) had worked his way to the front of the field by Lap 16 and battled the 2007 champion Cary Stapp (San Marcos, TX) to maintain the lead. Five different drivers have claimed the win in the five feature races that have been held so far this year. The Super Stock class is the premier ASA division at Thunderhill Raceway, and all of the drivers in this class are competing for a position in the Joe Gibbs ASA Member Track National Championship.

Topping off the night was the 30-lap Thunder Stock feature race. Several controversial incidents marred this event – complete with an expired time limit and a severe crash among the leaders on Lap 22 to end the race. Mason Teague (Paige, TX) survived the melee and was declared the race winner.

Throughout the evening, OI® representatives accepted donations from the drivers, race teams, the staff, sponsors, race officials and fans for their Adopt-A-Box program. Over $1,500 was collected, and these generous donations will help the organization ship c-rats® to approximately 2,500 deployed men and women.

Saturday’s racing events will recognize the Armed Forces – both locally and overseas

KYLE, TX (May 29, 2008) – Most Americans have taken some time this past week to celebrate Memorial Day, and Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX) is ready to show its support of the military this upcoming Saturday (May 31).

As a way of thanking the military, Thunderhill Raceway (THR) will be offering special admission rates for Saturday’s races to the men and women who serve our country. Active-duty military in uniform will be admitted to Saturday night's races at no charge. Those who prefer not to wear their uniforms will be admitted for half price with their military ID.

In addition, Thunderhill Raceway has partnered with Operation Interdependence (OI)® – an organization that provides a means for delivering support in the form of Civilian Rations® (c-rats®). These “treats” – and notes from home – are regularly sent to deployed forces by OI®.

Working interdependently with organizations, public bodies, corporations and the media, OI® volunteers of all ages currently send out over 50,000 individual c-rats® a month. For some, these c-rats® from OI® are the only communication from home that they receive. The goal for Operation Interdependence® is to provide each service man or woman with some treats and a letter from home EVERY MONTH during their entire deployment – with no one left out. OI® is well on its way to achieving that goal. Since launching in December 2001, OI® has delivered over one million c-rats® without impacting military resources.

OI® has recently introduced an Adopt-A-Box program, and OI® in Austin currently has an inventory of 245 boxes. It costs OI® $30 to ship just one box, and they’re looking for donations to help ship the boxes to the troops. These donations are tax deductible, and OI® will provide an acknowledgement in writing for all donations.

Two staff members from Thunderhill Raceway (THR) have already pledged donations for the Adopt-A-Box program – including Rebecca Cooper, THR CPA, and Pit Steward Stacy Millard on behalf of her employer, DWIDUDE.COM.

Nina Gayheart, National Director and Area Manager for OI® in Austin is asking all drivers, racing teams and fans to show their support of the military this weekend by contributing to the Adopt-A-Box program, packing c-rats® or by sharing notes and pictures with the troops.

“We encourage the racing teams and fans to come into the garage and pack a few c-rats® and write notes on Saturday,” said Gayheart. “And if they want to send some pictures, they can add notes on the back. The troops really enjoy those personal touches.”

Thunderhill Raceway delivers jam-packed racing action

Ten classes of cars take to the track on Saturday night

KYLE, TX (May 27, 2008) – Plenty of race cars, trucks and karts were on hand to entertain the fans this past weekend at Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX). The green flag waved for 124 entries from all over the state of Texas, and time limits were imposed on each race to provide continuous racing action throughout the night.

The Lone Star Legends highlighted the agenda with its Legend, Bandolero and Thunder Roadster classes.

The Bandoloros were the first feature race on the agenda, and lots of youngsters took their scaled-down, sleek racecars out on the track. The race winner was ten-year-old T. J. Michael from Plano (TX).

Sixteen old-style race cars in the Legends class showed the fans lots of spins and action in their 15-lap feature event. Michael Dabney, Jr., from Kaufman (TX) came up through the field from the rear and managed to capture the checkered flag.

The Thunder Roadsters were next in line, and the two race leaders playing plenty of “bumper tag,” throughout the race. J. C. Umscheid from Alvarado (TX) grabbed the win.

Brian Kyempel claimed yet another victory in the NasKarts, while Jim Albert from Lockhart (TX) continued his domination in the Pro Trucks by adding another feature race to his winning streak.

The Dwarf Car Racing Series of Texas was next on the agenda, and a melee on the first lap brought out the caution for a complete restart. Keith Roach from Buda (TX) took the lead on Lap 8 and held on for the win.

The time limit was enforced for the 16 Thunder Stocks that started the feature race. Following a huge oil spill caused by a blown engine, Gary Chancellor from Bastrop (TX) was declared the winner when the clock expired.

Umscheid pulled double-duty on Saturday night and started on the outside pole for the ExpressJet 35 Pro Modified race. Although he battled hard for the lead, Umscheid had to head to the pits due to an oil leak and restart at the rear of the field. Justin Long was able to take advantage of Umscheid’s mechanical misfortune by grabbing the lead and a race victory.

The scheduled 40-lap ASA A-Line Super Stock was cut short due to six caution flags. Cary Stapp from San Marcos (TX), who was the 2007 A-Line Super Stock champion, took the lead on Lap 15 and survived the wrecks and spins to claim victory. Four different drivers have captured wins in the four races that have been held so far this year in this exciting class.

Topping off the night was the 25-lap Grand Stock feature race. Floyd Reed from Spicewood (TX) started the race in the 13th position and survived several wrecks to work his way to the front. Reed took the lead on Lap 9 and claimed victory when the time expired on this event.

Thunderhill Raceway welcomes Lone Star Legends

Lone Star Legends, Bandoleros and Thunder Roadsters join Saturday’s Racing Agenda

KYLE, TX (May 23, 2008) – Thunderhill Raceway, a 3/8-mile, asphalt D-shaped oval track that’s located in Kyle (TX), has scheduled some exciting stock-car racing action this Saturday (May 24) – highlighted by the Lone Star Legends.

The Lone Star Legends are headquartered at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth (TX), and they visit racetracks all over the state.

The Legends class feature old-style racecars – including 1934-1937 Chevy, Ford and Dodge coupes and sedans. The Bandoleros are scaled-down, sleek racecars that run on small, 30HP engines. The Thunder Roadsters are unique-looking, fiberglass racecars that run on 132HP Yamaha engines. All three classes are sanctioned by INEX, which is an organization that promotes uniform rules and enforces safety standards.

Young drivers are often at the helm of these machines. The Bandit class of the Bandoleros starts its drivers at the age of eight. The Legends have a bit more horsepower, and youngsters who are 14 and over are allowed to drive these unique cars. The minimum age for the Thunder Roadsters is 16.

Mary Ann Naumann, THR Owner/Promoter, is excited about the appearance of these cars at this weekend’s race. “We’ve really seen this series grow over the past couple of years, and we know it’s giving young racers a great opportunity to start their racing careers,” said Naumann. “We know that our future depends on the development of young racers, and the Lone Star Legends group is helping to create the passion and skills needed for advancement in the racing ranks. We want to make sure they feel right at home here at Thunderhill Raceway this weekend.”

Naumann’s niece, Kristen “KT” Wallace, will be bringing her #12 Bandolero all the way from Jasper (GA) to race on Saturday. This 14-year-old driver is looking forward to racing in Texas – especially since she has some deep racing roots in the Lone Star State.

Kristen’s dad, Jake Wallace, Jr., is a racing legend at two South Texas former tracks – Longhorn Speedway and San Antonio Speedway. After losing his dad, Jake moved his family to Georgia and ran his Late Model at many of the tracks out east. Jake eventually passed on his racing genes to his son and Kristen’s brother, Eric Wallace.

Eric is currently employed by Roush Racing and will be making his debut this year as the Car Specialist and Tire Carrier for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series #16 car driven by Greg Biffle.

One of Kristen’s grandfathers, the late Jake Wallace, Sr., also raced for many years all over the state of Texas. Her other grandfather, Jack Sandefur, is the well-known Director of Technical/Pit Operations for Thunderhill Raceway and the Texas Super Racing Series Late Models.

“Racing has been such a big part of our family life, and I’m ready to give it a try,” commented Kristen. “I really appreciate all of the support that I’ve already received from my family as I go through my first year of racing with the Bandoleros. I hope I do well this year, especially when I race at Thunderhill Raceway this weekend!”

Three different drivers visit the Winner’s Circle in the Thunderhill Raceway Super Stock Class

KYLE, TX (May 13, 2008) – The ASA A-Line Super Stocks have been showing the fans some great racing action at Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX). This past weekend’s feature race was no exception.

Seventeen drivers lined up for the Thunderhill Raceway (THR) 40-lap feature event on Saturday, May 10 – including two of the previous race winners – Shawn Paul Lehman from Manchaca (TX) on April 12 and Mark Mathias from San Antonio (TX) on April 26.

Duane Toyne from Leander (TX) started on the inside of the fifth row in the ninth position. On Lap 9, Toyne and Mickey McKim from Manchaca (TX) made contact, but both drivers were able to maintain their positions.

During several lead changes, Toyne managed to work his way to the front. On Lap 32, Toyne passed Matt Hodge from Kyle (TX) and claimed the lead. He held off the 2007 Super Stock champion Cary Stapp from San Marcos (TX) for the remaining laps.

In other racing action, Carolyn Aramendia from Seguin (TX) claimed the Grand Stock feature win. Aramendia also won the April 26 Grand Stock feature race, and she now tops the points’ race for the Grand Stock class.

Gary Chancellor from Bastrop (TX) claimed his first feature win of the 2008 racing season in the Thunder Stock class, while Brian Kyempel claimed yet another victory in the NasKarts.

Tom Johnson from Kingsland (TX) grabbed the early lead in the 20-lap Texas Pro Sedan race and held on for his first victory of the 2008 season. Shawn Cannon from Forney (TX) started on the pole of the Allison Legacy Race Series 50-lap event and maintained the lead throughout the entire race.

Jim Albert from Lockhart (TX) continued to dominate the Pro Truck class and notched his second victory in the Pro Trucks at THR this season. H.E. Naumann from Del Valle (TX) proudly made his way to the Winner’s Circle following his victory in the ExpressJet Pro Modified 50 Race.

The next race scheduled for Thunderhill Raceway will be held on Saturday, May 24, starting at 7:00 p.m. The racing action will feature the Thunderhill Raceway ASA A-Line Super Stocks, Thunder Stocks, Grand Stocks and NasKarts – along with the Pro Trucks, ExpressJet Pro Modifieds, Dwarf Car Racing Series of Texas and the Lone Star Legends and Bandoleros.

Thunderhill Raceway introduces new Media Center

KYLE, TX (May 8, 2008) – Media representatives are invited to check out their new “home” – a separate Media Center in the VIP suite area – at Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX).

As part of the relocation efforts in the VIP suite area, the Thunderhill Raceway staff has moved its media operations from the downstairs Press Box to an exclusive area on the second floor.

The Press Box area will continue to be the headquarters for race sponsor activities during the 2008 racing season.

“We know it has been an awkward, crowded situation for our media supporters in the past,” said Mary Ann Naumann, Owner/Promoter of Thunderhill Raceway. “They were sharing the Press Box with the announcer, several race sponsors and special guests. We want to make certain the media folks get a nice, comfortable seat by the window to watch and report the races. We also hope this separate Media Center will let them know how much we value their support.”

Media representatives are invited to check out the Media Center during this Saturday’s (May 10) races at Thunderhill Raceway, starting with the opening ceremonies at 7:00 pm.

During the first phase of the relocation process, the announcer’s area and the associated audio equipment were moved to a suite on the second floor. A separate area was also created for the scoring staff, the electronic scoring equipment and the race control staff.

The final phase of VIP area redesign will be the addition of a suite for private birthday parties at the track – for both the young and “older” fans.

Thunderhill Raceway all set to honor “Racing Moms”

Special recognition planned for Mother’s Day Weekend

KYLE, TX (May 5, 2008) –Since this Sunday is Mother's Day, Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX) is making plans to honor all of the "racing moms" on Saturday night, May 10, starting at 7:00 pm.

The mothers of the drivers and staff members will be treated as guests of Thunderhill Raceway and will be given a free pit pass for the event. Prior to the start of the races, each mom will be individually recognized as part of the night’s opening ceremonies.

Mary Ann Naumann, Owner/Promoter of Thunderhill Raceway, feels it’s important for the drivers to recognize their moms for the significant role they play in their lives.

"Behind almost every race car driver is a mom who cares and supports her son or daughter on and off the racetrack,” stated Naumann. "It will be our pleasure to help our drivers honor their moms on Saturday night.

One of the highlights of the evening will be a drawing to give away a free massage to two lucky moms – courtesy of JRA and A New Day Massage, owned by Patty Day. Each winner will receive a certificate for a one-hour massage at Patty Day’s just-opened office at 7901 Cameron Road, Suite 336, in downtown Austin (512.219.1090). Also, 100 certificates (for $25 off a massage) will be given to moms of fans and drivers throughout the race night.

Another activity will also be held on Saturday night in the grandstands – a Mother’s Day Contest to determine the oldest mom, the mother with the most children and the mother with the youngest child at the track. Thunderhill Raceway cancels Thursday night practice sessions

Future practice sessions on pre-race Friday nights only

Thunderhill Raceway will no longer be holding Test-N-Tune practice sessions on Thursday nights of non-race weeks.

Unfortunately, we've had a very low turnout for these practices, so we're discontinuing them.

We will continue to have our Friday night Test-N-Tune practices during the week of a scheduled race at THR. The Friday practice sessions will be held from 4:00 p.m. until dark. The cost for pit passes for the practice sessions is $20 per car/driver, and $10 for all others. Grandstand admission is free.

I just spoke with Mary Ann, and it looks like it's a "go" for tonight's races at Thunderhill Raceway.

It looks like the track had quite a bit of rain last night, but the parking lot, etc., looks okay, especially with the sun drying it out this morning. Radar looks fine now, and I understand that a cold front with possible rain showers is due to arrive late tonight. So, bring your jackets and rain boots, just in case it arrives before the races are completed.

On a side note, Mary Ann asked that you remember that she's a race track owner/promoter, not a weather forecaster. LOL

Thunderhill Raceway Super Stock Drivers to compete in ASA National Championship

A-Line Super Stocks eligible for ASA Member Track National Championship

KYLE, TX (April 25, 2008) – The Super Stock class at Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX) will assume a new name for the 2008 racing season – the “ASA A-Line Super Stocks.”

As an American Speed Association (ASA) sanctioned track, Thunderhill Raceway will be part of the “first ever” ASA Member Track National Championship title race, and the THR Super Stock class was chosen to participate in this competition.

In addition, A-Line Auto Parts has returned as the title sponsor for the Super Stocks during the 2008 season.

The goal of the ASA Short Track National Championship is to activate a measuring system which takes into account many variables, such as field size, inversion, wins and number of races in a season, and create a level playing field to determine who is the ‘best-of-the-best’ of the ASA Member track champions nationwide.

The Joe Gibbs Driven ASA National Member Track Champion Award was designed to give the National Champion exposure with one of the top teams in racing – Joe Gibbs Racing.

Mary Ann Naumann, Owner/Promoter of Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX), is excited about this opportunity for the Super Stock drivers.

Premier Texas LM series joins NASCAR West for ’08 season opener

(Austin, TX) The Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS), the premier late-model touring series in the state, will open its season with the “Bright Lights, Big City” atmosphere of the NASCAR Grand National West series race at Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX) this Saturday night.

TSRS will open the night’s racing with the Allstate Texas Thunder 50, a scheduled 50-lap race. That race will precede the night’s highlighted Celebrity race and NASCAR race, the Allstate 150 Grand National Race.

TSRS Owner/Founder Mary Ann Naumann is excited about the series’ sixth season.

“We are thankful to the fans for their support of our series, which has grown into the premier late model series in Texas,” stated Naumann, the only director the series has known. “To be opening up for the second straight year with the NASCAR Grand National West Series is both a treat and honor for our series, its drivers, families and fans.”

NASCAR Camping World Series News & Notes (4/15 Edition)

The race … This event is the third in a 13-race series schedule this year for the NASCAR Camping World Series West. It marks the only visit to the state of Texas in 2008.

The track … Thunderhill Raceway is a 3/8-mile D-shaped paved oval with nine degrees banking in turns one and four, 12 degrees banking in the turns two and three, six degrees banking in the front straight and five degrees of banking in the back straight. This marks the fourth annual
visit to the track.

The records … Qualifying: Mike David, Sept. 30, 2006, 89.994 mph, 15.001 sec.; Race: Scott Lynch, March 31, 2007, 42.264 mph, 1 hour 22 minutes 31 seconds.

Special celebrity race featured … This year’s Allstate Texas Racefest at Thunderhill Raceway will feature a special “Allstate Celebrity Challenge presented by Mercedes-Benz of Austin.” Celebrity participants include Olympic Gold Medalist Ian Crocker; Texas Secretary of State Phil Wilson; actor Brad Leland of NBC’s “Friday Night Lights;” businessman Paul Carrozza; University of Texas Athletics CFO Ed Goble; and singer/songwriter Paula Nelson. They will race 10 laps, competing for bragging rights and prize money that will be donated to the charity of their choice.

Family attractions … This year’s Texas event will again feature plenty of family attractions. Included will be a “pit stop” challenge, a chance to ride in the pace car and live music by local Austin favorite George DeVore.

Three races, three different winners … The three visits to Thunderhill have resulted in three different race winners – Steve Portenga in 2005, Eric Holmes (No. 20 NAPA Auto Parts Toyota) in 2006 and Scott Lynch in 2007.

Three different pole winners, too … There has yet to be a repeat pole winner. The three drivers to set fast time in Texas were Scott Gaylord in 2005, Mike David (No. 2 Bennett Lane Winery Ford) in 2006 and Mike Duncan in 2007.

Return visits … Seven drivers made all three visits to Thunderhill in 2005, 2006 and 2007. They were Mike David, Mike Duncan, Scott Gaylord, Andrew Myers, Jack Sellers (No. 15 Coca-Cola Chevrolet), Brett Thompson (No. 61 Pets Best Chevrolet) and Tim Woods III (No. 54 Chino Hills Ford Ford).

Multiple top-five finishes … With top five finishes in all three visits, Mike David is the only driver with multiple top-fives at Thunderhill. In addition, no other active driver finished in the top 10 in all three events.

Best average finish … Of the seven drivers who competed in all three races at Thunderhill, Mike David has the best average finish with 4.0.

Leading laps … Steve Portenga has a slight edge over Mike David in terms of leading the most laps at the South Texas track. Portenga had led 113 laps, compared to 111 for David.

Leading money winner … Mike David is the leading money winner at Thunderhill. His winnings in three races total $15,182.

David Returns To Lone Star State Aiming For Another Top Finish

Thunder Hill Raceway’s 3/8-mile track features some of the tightest side-by-side racing on the NASCAR Camping World Series West circuit. However, it’s a track that perfectly suits 2007 champion Mike David (No. 2 Bennett Lane Winery Ford).

David began his title campaign with a runner-up finish at the short track in Kyle, Texas, a year ago. He hopes for similar results this season when the NASCAR Camping World Series West travels to the Lone Star State for the Allstate Texas Thunder 150 on Saturday, April 19.

The event, the third on the 2008 schedule, will be televised to a national audience live in high definition on HDNet. In addition, an enhanced replay will air on SPEED.

“Texas is probably one of our favorite tracks,” said David, who sits atop the championship standings after two races. “It seems to suit my driving style and the team as a whole. It seems like we do well every time we go there. So, we look forward to going.”

David, one of seven drivers to make all three visits by the NASCAR Camping World Series West to Thunder Hill Raceway in the past three years, registered a top-five finish there each time. He was leading on the last lap in 2006, when contact from another car sent him spinning and left him to finish fifth.

David credits handling with being the key to a good finish at this and other short tracks on the circuit. “When it’s that tight of racing and you have that many good cars, if you can make the car handle for every lap on a long run on tires, that’s the key,” said the 41-year-old Modesto, Calif., competitor who is in his eighth year driving for car owner Randy Lynch.

A year ago, David followed up his runner-up showing at Kyle with three more podium finishes. He attributes his success last season to those consistent finishes, which put him into the lead in the points and ultimately to the championship.

“I think history shows that it’s not always the guy that wins the most races that wins the championship,” he said. “It’s the guy that finishes in the top five the majority of the time. So, consistency was definitely the key to our success last year.”

Although he knows he faces a tough battle, David hopes to win a second consecutive championship this year. “That’s our goal, to repeat,” he said. “It’s never easy. It wasn’t easy the first time. I’m excited about giving it a try, but it won’t be easy.”

In addition, David points to a continued increase in the level of competition this season. “This year we have a couple more hurdles,” he said. “There’s two or three drivers coming back in the series or starting in the series with good teams that are really well funded that will hard to beat.”

Moving their team into a new shop has also added to their challenge, David said. “We moved the team during the winter,” he said. “So, we’re still trying to get caught up on cars and getting organized. We’ll have our work cut out for us, but we’ve got a good bunch of guys led by crew chief Mario Isola and they’ll be up for the challenge.”

Austin, TX (April 14, 2008) – The Allstate Texas Racefest, voted "event of the year" by NASCAR three years in a row, will return to Central Texas and the challenging D-shaped oval at Thunder Hill Raceway on April 19, 2008; bringing the stars of the NASCAR Grand National Division and the addition of the first "Allstate Celebrity Challenge presented by Mercedes-Benz of Austin." Celebrity participants include Olympic Gold Medalist Ian Crocker; Texas Secretary of State Phil Wilson; actor Brad Leland of NBC's "Friday Night Lights;" businessman Paul Carrozza (owner of RunTex); University of Texas Athletics CFO Ed Goble; and singer-songwriter Paula Nelson among others. Celebrity drivers will be competing in Stock Cars for 10 laps, racing for bragging rights and prize money that will be donated to the charity of their choice.

Tavo (C. T.) Hellmund and Aryn White of Full Throttle Productions, LP have high expectations and a few surprises for Central Texas race fans. “We're going to continue with the same successful elements of previous Racefest events and step it up a notch" White noted. A midway with all day DJ, NASCAR driver autograph session, face painting, a velcro climbing wall, and sponsor tents all add to the fun.

This year, the family-friendly atmosphere also includes:

• Kasey Kahne's NASCAR Sprint Cup car for personalized photo opportunities
• Allstate "pit stop" challenge for fans to test their skills with an impact gun
• A chance to win a ride in the pace car for the start of the NASCAR race
• Live music by local Austin favorite George DeVore
• And State of Texas Comptroller Susan Combs with the official race start as ‘Racefest Grand Marshal”

The festivities will also include the "Allstate 50" featuring the Texas Super Racing Series. TSRS is the premiere Late Model Series in the State.

Capping it all off is the highlight of the event, the Allstate Texas Thunder 150 NASCAR Grand National Division race, giving Central Texans a chance to see real NASCAR racing up close and near home. Two years ago David Gilliland finished second in the Allstate Texas Thunder 150 and by the next season won the NASCAR Sprint Cup pole position at the Daytona 500. “We are fortunate that NASCAR has granted us the one ‘off’ Cup weekend of the first half of the year," Hellmund said, referring to the fact that the NASCAR Sprint Cup stars aren't racing that weekend. "We know this date is a big plus for all of the fans that attend our event.” Hellmund continued.

Thunderhill Raceway owner takes center stage at Texas Motor Speedway

Mary Ann Naumann presents check to Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

KYLE, TX (April 9, 2008) – Mary Ann Naumann, Owner/Promoter of Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX) and founder of the Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS) Late Models, recently had the “experience of a lifetime” in the stock-car racing world.

Naumann was given the opportunity to present a check to Dale Earnhardt, Jr., prior to the Samsung 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race held this past Sunday (April 6) at Texas Motor Speedway.

During the qualifying rounds, Earnhardt, Jr., clocked the fastest time and started on the pole for Sunday’s race. Earnhardt, Jr., earned a $5,500 check for the Fastest Lap Award and Naumann presented the check to him in front of an estimated crowd of 190,000 fans. The presentation was also broadcast on large video screens all over the track.

Naumann was very excited about making the presentation to Earnhardt, Jr. “I’m still in shock after this weekend’s event at Texas Motor Speedway,” she stated. “I had originally been slated to attend the NASCAR Sprint Cup Drivers’ Meeting, but it didn’t happen due to a miscommunication. I was disappointed about missing the meeting, but the opportunity to make the presentation to Junior more than made up for it. I was truly honored!”

Earnhardt, Jr., finished 12th in the Samsung 500, and he’s currently in the fourth position in the overall NASCAR Sprint Cup points standings for 2008. He is the driver of the green and white Hendricks Motor Sports #88 Chevrolet. Earnhardt, Jr., began competing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2000 and is a national icon in stock-car racing.

“Junior,” as he’s called, is the also the son of legendary Dale Earnhardt, the seven-time Cup champion who was killed during an on-track incident during the 2001 Daytona 500.

Naumann will resume her normal duties this upcoming weekend with the 2008 season opener at Thunderhill Raceway (THR) in Kyle, TX.

The April 12 race at THR will feature the Pro Truck and Pro Modified classes and the Texas Pro Sedans – along with the Thunderhill Raceway A-Line Super Stocks, Thunder Stocks and Grand Stocks. Highlighting the evening are Kids’ Bike Races at intermission, sponsored by the JRA Kids Club.

April 12th will mark the return of a popular four cylinder stock car touring series to the 2008 Thunderhill Raceway event schedule. The Texas Pro Sedans will resume their 2008 schedule by holding the second event of their 33rd racing season at the Kyle, Texas 3/8 mile asphalt oval. The event will be the first of eight TPS series races hosted by Thunderhill Raceway during 2008.

The Texas Pro Sedans racing format will consist Qualifying Time Trials at 5:30 pm followed by a Feature Race with a distance of 25 or 33 laps (to be announced) at approximately 8:10pm.

Many of drivers and cars who were in the first TPS race, held March 29 at Red River Speedway in Wichita Falls, TX, will also compete in the race at THR. A field of 23 drivers have filed their entry.

Lalo Leal of Corpus Christi is currently 2nd in 2008 TPS points after his near tie finish at Red River Speedway. He trailed the winner Josh Cournoyer of Wichita Falls by 1/10 second at the checkered flag. It was the closest Feature Race finish in 32 years of TPS racing.

Six time TPS Champion Bill LaBarge of Bryan has filed entry in his #27 BMW “Beamer”. He won the TPS Championship in 1992, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2003 and 2004. No other driver has dominated the TPS series championship as has Bill LaBarge. He placed fourth in the TPS season opener at RRS.

The entry list includes several other notable TPS drivers.

A race entry was received from Jesse Sandoval of Corpus Christi. He will drive the #7 Ford Pinto.

Mike Merrell of Kingsland, Texas will be in the drivers seat of George Merrell’s #70 VW Scirocco.

2007 TPS Rookie of the Year driver Ja Lane of Katy will drive his #85 Ford Focus.

Mike Knotts of Universal City will be at the wheel of his #48 VW Scirocco.

All four drivers are tied in early season TPS point standings with nine points each.

Sergio Hexsel of Live Oak, Texas will again drive his familiar, yellow #20 VW Rabbit (pictured above). He was the 2005 and 2007 TPS Champion. During the 2007 season he won three TPS feature races at THR. His last win was at Thunderhill Raceway.

Kids’ Bike Races will be part of the racing action on the asphalt oval

(Kyle, TX) April 5, 2008 – Opening night is fast approaching for Thunderhill Raceway (THR), and the racing teams are working hard to get their cars ready to compete for the 11th season on the only asphalt oval short track in Central Texas. Not only are cars being tuned up for the April 12 season opener, but bicycles are also being prepared to be part of the action.

The 2008 season will mark the fourth year that the JRA Bike Races have lit up the front straightaway during intermission.

The JRA Kids Club staff welcomes back its title sponsor, Differential Specialties from Georgetown (TX), for the five bicycle race nights at THR. This sponsor will be returning for its second season as the title sponsor.“I’m glad to continue my support of the JRA Kids Club and their activities,” commented Greg Norton, who is the owner of Differential Specialties. “It’s great to see the children involved and participating in racing. I feel sure that some of them may be the future stars of auto racing.”

Also returning for the 2008 season is the Children of the Future class – featuring Power Wheel cars. Kids that are too young to peddle their way across the finish line will pilot these small battery-operated vehicles to compete on the track’s tricky surface.

Children, ages 3 to 13, are invited to participate by bringing their Power Wheel cars or bicycles to the track, along with a helmet. To enter, visit the JRA Clubhouse that’s near Turn 4 in the VIP suite section that’s at the top of grandstands.

Thunderhill Raceway recently announced new grandstand pricing for the 2008 season. Children 12 and under get in free on race nights. Adults are now admitted for just $10, and students get in for only $8 with their student ID cards.

Two special scheduled events will be excluded from the reduced admission price break – the 4th Annual Allstate NASCAR Racefest on April 19 and the Allstate Texas Stock Car Spectacular on September 26 and 27.

Champion Truck Driver sets his sights on a victory at Thunderhill Raceway

KYLE, TX (April 3, 2008) – Jim Albert is no stranger to the Winner’s Circle, and he’s on a roll again for the 2008 racing season.

Albert was crowned the Texas Truck Champion in 2007 after claiming six victories at Houston Motorsports Park (HMP) in Houston, TX, and several Top 5 finishes at Thunderhill Raceway (THR) in Kyle, TX.

This year’s competition for the coveted title has been expanded. In addition to THR and HMP, two more asphalt tracks will be included in the battle for the crown – Red River Speedway in Wichita Falls, TX, and Corpus Christi Speedway in Corpus Christi, TX.

The Texas Pro Truck drivers have the option to race at all four tracks and then use their best 12 finishes to compete for the championship title. In addition, the drivers will receive bonus points for racing at all four tracks during the 2008 racing season.

Albert has already won the two Pro Truck races that have been held so far this year – on March 15 at Houston Motorsports Park and the March 29 race at Corpus Christi Speedway.

Thunderhill Raceway’s season opener on April 12 will be Albert’s next challenge. This Lockhart, TX, resident is hoping to power his #31 blue 2004 Chevy Silverado Tuck to victory lane for the first time ever at THR.

“I’ve never won a truck race at Thunderhill Raceway,” said Albert. “Unfortunately, I haven’t started any higher than the sixth position, even though I’ve had the fastest qualifying time on several occasions. We usually draw for position, and I never seem to get a lucky draw. Even though I’m often the fastest truck on the track, I usually have to battle through traffic for the lead. The inversion process has been killing me at Thunderhill, but I do feel it has taught me to be a much better driver. Maybe I’ll finally get a lucky draw this time.”

Albert feels his strongest competitor for this year’s championship race is Rusty Mirth, driver of the #07 Pro Truck. Mirth has claimed the second position in both of the Pro Truck races that have been held so far this year.

Albert gets as much fulfillment from his off-the-track activities as he does when he’s racing his truck on Saturday nights. He often visits schools in the Lockhart area, and he enjoys watching the kids get excited about his race truck. Bluebonnet Elementary in Lockhart, TX, is on Albert’s touring agenda this week.

The 2008 racing season marks the third year that Albert has been competing in the Pro Truck class. Albert is sponsored by Serta, Apex Performance, Ringers Gloves, Seitz Garage, Laser Signs, Petroff Towing, LG Electronics and Ayres Real Estate Investors.

Thunderhill Raceway introduces student discount rate

KYLE, TX (March 20, 2008) – As part of an ongoing effort to make Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX) even more “family friendly,” a new student discount is being introduced for the 2008 racing season at the 3/8-mile, asphalt oval, stock-car track. This student discount follows a recent announcement about decreasing the adult grandstand general admission ticket cost to only $10.

Starting with the Thunderhill Raceway season opener on April 12, students presenting a valid school ID can purchase a grandstand ticket for only $8 ($2 discount). This new discount is valid for students who are 13-years-old and older – including college students. Younger students (ages 12 and under) will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

“We’ve received several requests for a price break on the admission costs for teenagers and college students,” said Mary Ann Naumann, Thunderhill Raceway’s Owner/Promoter. “We know we have many families who regularly attend the races. We also have lots of nearby college students, and we want to make it a bit more affordable for them to watch the races.”

Mike Reininger, driver of the #84 Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS) Late Model, races regularly at Thunderhill Raceway and is excited about the discount.“I have two daughters – Michelle who’s 17 and Kelly who’s 15 – so this discount will really help out,” commented Reininger. “I think parents will be more likely to bring their kids to the track with this discount, rather than leaving them at home or choosing to do something else on race nights.”

Thunderhill Raceway owner gets opportunity to fulfill ‘Bucket List’ wish

Mary Ann Naumann to visit NASCAR Sprint Cup Drivers’ Meeting in April

KYLE, TX (March 17, 2008) – Mary Ann Naumann, Owner/Promoter of Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX) and founder of the Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS) Late Models, will soon get to check off an item on her “Bucket List.”

Naumann has been tabbed to be a guest at the Drivers’ Meeting prior to the NASCAR Sprint Cup race Sunday, April 6, at Texas Motor Speedway (TMS).

Naumann’s quest to attend a NASCAR drivers’ meeting began when she heard about the recently-released movie, “The Bucket List.” The movie stars Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson, and it’s about two old codgers, both of whom are suffering from cancer. One of them (Freeman) talks about a "bucket list" – things he wants do before he kicks the bucket. The two stars decide to fly out on a private jet to fulfill their odyssey with an attitude of “anything’s possible.”

Naumann decided to create her own “Bucket List.” While she’s fortunate her health is great, she did share the top item on her list with family and friends – that being her desire to visit a NASCAR Cup drivers’ meeting.

Naumann’s wish was conveyed though the appropriate NASCAR channels, and she found out earlier today that her dream will come true in just a few weeks.

“I’m just ecstatic,” Naumann replied when given the news this morning. “I’m so excited about this opportunity to visit the drivers’ meeting at TMS. Seeing all of the drivers together in the Media Center will be awesome, but I’m even more excited about watching how the meeting is conducted. I’m always trying to learn how to do things better, and observing a drivers’ meeting on a professional level will be a wonderful learning experience for me. I can’t wait to share my experience with the THR and TSRS drivers and staff.”

The Samsung 500 at TMS is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on FOX-TV.

A Loss in our Racing Community - Todd Weeks' Mom

We're sorry to hear that Todd Weeks, driver of the THR Thunder Stock #27, has lost his mom (Jenifer Mae Weeks) after her long battle with Addison's Disease.

She loved coming to the race track to cheer her son on. Some of you might remember her in her wheelchair, cheering at the top of her lungs at the top of the grandstands. As long as she was healthy, she never missed a race. She was a huge inspiration to Todd and will be greatly missed. She was looking forward to the upcoming season, and it's going to be a tough racing year for the Weeks family.

Services are as follows:

Viewing and Memorial at Porting Loring North in San Antonio Tuesday night from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

Funeral at 10:00 a.m. at the Bulverde United Methodist Church on US-281 North, just outside San Antonio.

Thunderhill Raceway slashes Grandstand Admission Ticket Prices - Introducing $10 Adult General Admission in 2008

KYLE, TX (March 14, 2008) – The staff at Thunderhill Raceway (THR) is making a bold move to fill the grandstands in 2008 – by offering its fans a reduction in cost to watch the races.

Starting with its season opener on April 12, Thunderhill Raceway will offer its grandstand admission to adults for only $10. This new admission rate will be $5 less than the adult admission cost that’s been charged for the past few years.

Several other changes are also being made to make racing more affordable for its fans – including free admission for children and discounts for senior, military and public service personnel.

Free admission will be offered for children ages 12 and under, when accompanied by an adult. Senior citizens, police officers, firefighters and EMS personnel will get a $2 discount, with the presentation of official identification at the gate. Active military, with the proper ID, will be admitted for $5.

Mary Ann Naumann, THR’s Owner/Promoter, is reaching out to South Texas stock-car racing fans by reducing admission costs and asking them to help her fill the grandstands.

“As long as we can start seeing the grandstands filling up, we plan to continue to offer these discounts to our loyal race fans,” said Naumann. “And, hopefully, we’ll also see lots of new faces. So, we’re encouraging everyone to invite their friends, neighbors and families to come out and enjoy some of the best stock car racing in the state of Texas – at Thunderhill Raceway – and save themselves some money at the same time!”

Thunderhill Raceway is also proud to introduce one of the best concessions around, the newly added “ThunderGrill”, owned and managed by Richard Hamilton.

Open Practice Session added on Saturday, March 15

At the request of several drivers, Thunderhill Raceway will be having an additional open practice session this Saturday, March 15, from 12:00 p.m. (noon) until 6:00 p.m. It will be our last Saturday open practice session before the 2008 racing season begins.

The cost for this practice session only will be $25 per car/driver. No charge will be made for others in the pit area or grandstands.

Fuel or tires will not be available at the track this Saturday.
